Aggiungi al carrelloFolio. (22 x 18 inches). [4] Dedication and Preface, vi, 10, [2] List of Subscribers pp. Illustrated with a lithographic title and 20 tinted lithographic plates after Morison. Within the original half morocco and cloth gilt-stamped portfolio, expertly refurbished, and a custom green cloth clamshell box A rare hand-coloured portfolio issue of Morison's views of the palaces and hunting seats of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, the dynastic landscape of Prince Albert's German homeland. Morison's Views of the Ducal Palaces and Hunting Seats of Saxe Coburg and Gotha records the residences, castles, parks, and hunting seats associated with the ducal house of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, only a few years after the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Published in London in 1846, the work translated a German princely landscape into a British luxury publication, appealing to contemporary interest in Albert's origins and in the architectural and picturesque settings of the Coburg-Gotha court. The plates depict the principal ducal sites, including Veste Coburg, Schloss Ehrenburg, Schloss Rosenau, Callenberg, Friedenstein at Gotha, Friedrichsthal, Reinhardsbrunn, Friedrichswerth, Molsdorf, Tenneberg, and Wachsenburg. Several plates include multiple views, giving the series a topographical as well as architectural character. The result is a visual survey of castles, country houses, hunting lodges, gardens, and forested estates, presented through the refined medium of tinted and hand-coloured lithography. Schloss Rosenau gives the work particular resonance. The country residence near Coburg was Prince Albert's birthplace and became one of the key sites through which British audiences imagined his German childhood and dynastic identity. Morison's wider sequence places Rosenau among the network of residences and seats that defined the cultural and territorial world of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Douglas Morison was a British artist who worked in both England and Germany, producing views of royal and aristocratic residences, including subjects connected with Victoria and Albert. The lithographs were printed by Hullmandel & Walton, among the leading London lithographic printers of the period. Morgan records that the work was published in both uncoloured and hand-coloured forms, with the hand-coloured issue trimmed, mounted, and published in portfolio form, as here. Abbey, Travel, 121. Thieme-Becker XXV, 156. Tooley 335.…

Aggiungi al carrelloA pleasant work containing twenty-five views of Haddon Hall as it existed in the mid-nineteenth century. Haddon Hall is now known as one of the great ducal mansions almost entirely preserved in its Tudor state, owing to it being passed into the hands of the Manners family, who favoured their home in Belvoir Castle, in the late sixteenth century. Douglas Morison (1814-1847) was an English painter who achieved some success and was invited to produce some sketches for Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle. He has signed the dedication to the Duke of Rutland, owner of the famous Tudor manor house. First edition, signed by the author; folio (53 x 37 cm); 25 tinted lithograph plates, lithographed title, lithographed dedication and plate list, subscriber list, touch of waterstaining to the outer margin only of the first half of the plates, title with a couple small marginal tears, very light scattered spotting; contemporary half red morocco, pebbled cloth boards, gilt flat spine, all edges gilt, a little rubbing to spine, upper joint starting to split at foot, otherwise a very good copy. Aggiungi al carrello[1] + 23pp., foolscap 8vo. On 24 leaves attached in one corner by a metal stud. The title page carries the reference TM144D, and states that the producer was Cleverdon, and gives times of transmission, rehearsal and recording, with 'R.P. REF. NO.' and the details of the secretary who typed out the document. The piece was narrated by Barker, with the 'Speakers' are named as Burns, Carter, Crook, Crutchley, Meynell, Pollard, the Stones and Warde. This document, apparently unpublished, is the official transcript of an extremely entertaining and reavealing programme, filled with valuable reminiscences, of which the following gives a taster: '14. JANET STONE: (TAPE) | He used to talk about his extraordinary youth, his upbringing - that was fantastic. His mother must have been remarkable, becauses there he was, totally working class youth, with a father who, I think, physically resembled him, but he despised from the very bottom of his heart, who was a drunk, gin drunk. And the stories of how he used to come home dead drunk and how Morison put him to bed - the anguish of it all, and then finally how he had the gruelling business of going round to identify him in the Salvation Army home when he died. And how his mtoher kept this little shop, and how she held them together, kept them going. | 15. BARKER: | Morison also talked to Graham Pollard, the bibliographer, who shared his early political views. | 16. GRAHAM POLLARD: (TAPE) | He told me over many dinner tables, and over the first opening of oysters on every 1st of September at Whitstable, a great deal of the history of his life. Mrs. Morison, his mother, was a great adherent of Thomas Paine, and the young Morison was brought up very much in a dogmatic free thought atmosphere. After he left school, he went to work for the British and Foreign Bible Society as a clerk. In his spare time he, to use his own phrase, hung round the Jesuits in Farm Street, and they taught him Latin, and in due course he joined the Roman Church.'.…
