Born in 1944, he graduated in 1968 from the Tokyo University of Education (now Tsukuba University) with a major in English literature. His graduation thesis encompassed Studies of Milton's Paradise Lost with Special Reference to the Relation between His Genius and His Style. In 1983-1984 Professor Moritani studied Milton with Alastair Fowler at Edinburgh University as a post graduate worker, and in the summer of 1992, studied Theology and Science with John Polkinghorne, then President of Queens College, Cambridge University. That year, he received a L.H.D. from Benito F. Reyes' World University of America in Ojai, California. During the years 1999-2000 he was a Visiting Scholar at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a Senior Fellow at The Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace, at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This book is Volume 3 of a series of Understanding Milton publications written by Professor Moritani. Volumes I and II were published in Japanese.
