Die biographische Literatur kennt Blanckarts gewöhnlich als Maler, hier bezeichnet er selbst jedoch als "dramatischer Schriftsteller", beschreibt seine Laufbahn als Maler und endet mit einer Darstellung seiner Tätigkeit als Schriftsteller. - Moritz Blanckarts studierte an der Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf und widmete sich als Schüler von Schlachten- und Historienmalern vorwiegend diesem Genre. "Mit seinem Bild 'König Wilhelm bei Königgrätz' (1867) ging er dann zur Darstellung zeitgenössischer Kriegsszenen über.
