In The Angel of History, Mosès looks at three Jewish philosophers-Franz Rosenzweig, Walter Benjamin, and Gershom Scholem-who formulated a new vision of history in 1920s Germany by moving away from the spirit of assimilation and the Enlightenment belief in humanity's inevitable progress. Instead, they imagined history as discontinuous, made of moments that form no totality but whose ruptures are both more significant-and more promising-than any apparent homogeneity. Their direct experience of the twentieth century's great upheavals led these three thinkers to abandon the old models of causality that had previously accounted for human experience, and their cultural and religious background allowed them to turn to the Jewish experience of history. Jewish messianism always had to confront the experience of catastrophe, deception, and failure. Mosès shows how this tradition informed a genuine Jewish conception of history in which redemption may-or may not-occur at any moment, giving a new chance for hope by locating utopia in the heart of the present.

Para la tradición judía, el sentido del Antiguo Testamento es inagotable: la interpretación es libre de llenar los blancos y los márgenes con signos lingüísticos y de proponer, de generación en generación, nuevas lecturas. En oposición a toda visión dogmática, esta permanente invención constituye la esencia misma de la Revelación. Las múltiples interpretaciones de la Biblia buscan ante todo reencontrar el aliento original que anima el texto, los ecos aún audibles de la voz infinita que habla a través de él. Hay allí algo así como un Eros que vivifica el texto, reflejo lejano de la palabra divina. Empero, dado que esta palabra está destinada a los hombres, y dado que apunta a ordenar su vida en esta tierra, en el texto bíblico el aliento original del Eros divino se encarnó en el discurso de la Ley. En esta obra, Stéphane Mosès hace una lectura de los textos mayores de la Biblia, reinterpretándolos en los términos del discurso filosófico occidental, y sometiendo ese discurso, a su turno, a las categorías judías que lo trabajan desde el interior. Mosès muestra cómo, en esos textos, opera la relación entre el Eros y la Ley, el deseo y la regla, la promesa y su cumplimiento, la experiencia de lo ilimitado y las fronteras del lenguaje. Y, por otra parte, cómo esos temas encuentran eco en la filosofía occidental, no sin cuestionarla y provocar en ella desplazamientos inéditos en relación con la tradición "griega". De esos desplazamientos nace un modo distinto, a la vez nuevo y muy antiguo, de leer la Biblia, y, por tanto, una manera distinta de descifrar el mundo, otra manera de proyectar en él un sentido.
