Upper corner torn from p59/60 in Volume I, appears to be an original production flaw - no loss of text. Gift inscription to verso of front free endpaper in both volumes, dated 1855. Pasted to the leading blank in Volume I is an original letter to Lady Coltman, handwritten and signed by Sydney Smith.
