The author weaves an engaging narrative around a cast of unforgettable characters, bringing to life the struggles, triumphs, and resilience of those who dared to forge a new life in the West. At the heart of the story is Johnstone, a former gold miner turned farmer, whose courage and determination are tested when a devastating prairie fire threatens his home. As he fights to save his loved ones, Johnstone's bravery inspires a young boy named Eric, who risks his own life to rescue a helpless child from the flames. In the aftermath of the fire, the author explores themes of family, community, and the unyielding spirit of those who faced the unknown with unwavering hearts. This book offers a poignant and immersive glimpse into the lives of ordinary people living through extraordinary times, capturing the essence of a pivotal era in American history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. /Stuart Hardy, illustrator. (illustratore). CONDITION: Good Plus; extrems rubbed and bumped, pp. 71-80 have creased corners, a half inch gutter small tear, quite clean and straight with a lovely top board and very faded spine. Juvenile hardback. Ivan's father returns from India to find that his kind and beautiful wife has died, leaving this small son. As the book progresses the timid child becomes braver and the father more sensitive. Hard to imagine as a children's book, yet the inscription reads, "Master Lionel Tennyson. With love and best wishes from His dear Old Nana S. F. His eighth birthday, Nov-ber 7th 1897" and it was apparently read and reread. (Lionel Hallam Tennyson, 3rd Baron Tennyson (1889 to 1951) was the grandson of the poet. He became a famous cricketer and a humorous writer. A treasure.
