This book follows a young girl named Edith and explores the trials and tribulations of her coming-of-age within the United States' upper crust at the turn of the 20th century. Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: Very Good. Oblong quarto measuring 12" x 10". Textured black cloth over flexible paper boards. Contains 121 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 2" x 3.5" and 6" x 10" with some captions. Very good photo album with rubbing and edgewear with near fine photographs. A ph…oto album compiled by Mr. and Mrs. James Mason of East Orange, New Jersey while on a cross country road trip to California beginning in May of 1915. A small clipping from a newspaper reads, "Mr. and Ms. James Mason, East Orange, New Jersey will leave their family on May 3, 1915 on a motor trip to the West on the Overland Trail. They will be away a year and make their temporary home in Mill Valley, California." A small description of the start of their trip is typed and affixed to the first page. "At 4:30 p.m. on May 3, 1915, bidding goodbye to our numerous kind friends, we left East Orange, N.J. for California." It continues, "our total load was about 4600 lbs and our horsepower 29.4 on our distant running board we carried 3 ½ gals. Gas and a toolbox containing provisions. our mileage for the first day was 65 and average speed 20 m.p.r. Gas 6 gals." The album continues with short entries discussing destinations, miles driven, and their provisions as well as photographs from their various stops. The first leg of their trip was through New York where they "glided swiftly passed many large homes with beautiful gardens.we were most impressed by the fact that hardly any cars passed us and we saw very few people in the small villages or around the farmhouses." The photos show the car as well as the Mason's picnicking and enjoying the sights along the way. Many of the photos show the expanse of American roads and countryside with images of farms, railroads, and the passing landscape. Also included are newspaper clippings from various stops including Iowa and Nebraska mostly discussing the weather. Once in California they visited Monterey, Big Basin, La Jolla, Oakland, and Stanford University. One section of photos shows the couple visiting the Redwoods. The Masons and their friends are photographed standing in a line showing how large the trees are. Another photo shows their car at an overlook near San Fernando. They photographed their car near the hills and valleys of California and took photos of the beach, ferns, and palms trees. Two large photographs are taken of the Pacific Ocean with crashing waves. The couple also visited Yosemite with photos of the mountains and falls of the national park. Also included are pictorial postcards from their trip and later photographs from their trip back to the east coast. An interesting account of an early American bi-coastal road trip.

Aggiungi al carrelloNo Binding. Condizione: Very Good. Collection of eight original letters related to the Andrew Jackson Rickoff family. Letters are on white, beige, or gray paper and include handwritten, printed, and typed text. Text in English except for the circular letter of credit in French. Circa 1888-1891. Various measurements from about 4…1/4" x 6 1/2" and 8 1/2" x 11." Fourteen pages. Each letter is very clean and intact except for slight age toning, occasional offsetting, and a few wrinkles and fold lines. Each letter and the entire collection are Very Good. Andrew Jackson Rickoff (1824-1899) was an American educator, school superintendent, and author based in Ohio. He was a close friend of President James A. Garfield. After graduating from Woodward College in Cincinnati and receiving a Master's Degree from Ohio University, Andrew became a teacher and superintendent in Portsmouth, Ohio. 1867 marked the beginning of Andrew's fifteen-year tenure as superintendent of schools in Cleveland during which he implemented a significant overhaul of the city's public schools by introducing co-education and reorganizing all schools into the primary, grammar, or high school levels. Andrew married Rebecca Davis Rickoff, a fellow educator who specialized in primary education. Rebecca contributed to some of the reforms that Andrew implemented. They had a daughter, Bertha Monroe Rickoff, who also became a Cleveland public school teacher. The following is a summary of the collection (the last six letters relate to one of the Rickoffs' trips to Europe). (1) Printed invitation (1888, 1 pp.; original envelope included) from Mrs. James Mason (Caroline Robinson) announcing the upcoming wedding of her daughter, Belle Hartford (Mason), to Harry Augustus Garfield on June 14, 1888 in Mentor, Ohio. Harry "Hal" Garfield was a lawyer, professor, public official, and one of the sons of President James A. Garfield. (2) Typed letter (June 20, 1888, 2 pp.) to Bertha Rickoff from Robert Clarke & Co., a publisher and bookseller, about one of her books to be published. (3) Typed cover letter (March 2, 1891, 1 pp.) from "Legation des Etats-Unis d'Amerique" to Rebecca Rickoff about (formerly) enclosed letters from "Mr. Loncoln" and a newspaper article about Andrew, which are not included in this collection. (4) Printed and handwritten circular letter of credit (April 17, 1891, 1 pp.) to Rebecca for her trip in Europe; text is in French. (5) Handwritten letter to Bertha from American Consul James Verner Long of the U.S. Consulate in Florence (1891, 4 pp.; original U.S. Consulate envelope included). (6) Handwritten letter to Roland J. Hemmick of the U.S. Consulate of Geneva from James Verner Long (c. 1891, 2 pp.; original U.S. Consulate envelope included). In this letter, Long introduces Rebecca and Bertha Rickoff to Hemmick, whom he describes as "warm personal friends of the late President Garfield's family." (7) Handwritten letter to Rebecca (c. 1891, 2 pp.) on "Legation des Etats Unis d'Amerique, L'Attache Naval" stationery. (8) Handwritten letter (c. 1891, 1 pp.) to Bertha from Charles (Estus?) Lamb, a friend. Lamb is not feeling well and asks Bertha if they can postpone their visit to the Garden to later in the afternoon so he has time to recuperate.
