Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Very good. - Humorist Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber's autographed inscription on a 4 inch high by 6-3/4 inch wide light blue page from an autograph album. The inscription reads: "B.P. Shillaber with accompanying regards of 'Mrs. Partington'. Chelsea, May 25, 1878". The left edge of the page is slightly rough. Very goo…d. The American printer, editor and humorist Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber (1814-1890) often wrote under the pseudonym of his fictional character "Mrs. Partington". After first working for a printing office, Shillaber moved to Boston where he became an editor for the Boston Daily Post and the Saturday Evening Gazette. He introduced the character Mrs. Ruth Partington at the Post. With the help of Charles G. Halpine, Shillaber became the founding editor of the humor magazine "The Carpet-Bag". Both Mark Twain & Ward sent their first contributions to the periodical. Indeed 16 year old Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) contributed his short article "The Dandy Frightening the Squatter" which saw publication in the May 1, 1852 issue of "The Carpet-Bag". Not only does Twain later refer to Mrs. Partington in his book "Roughing It", but Shillaber's character Ike Partington (Mrs. Partington's nephew) may have inspired Twain's character "Tom Sawyer".

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. Condition: Near-Fine. 12mo. size, 305 pp. Popular Edition, reprint of the original 1874 edition. Inscribed by the author "To Otis Kinsman, My excellent neighbor and friend, with all my heart, Jan. 9. 1883." Green and brown printed illustration on paper over boards. With p…ublisher's advertisements printed on the endpapers. Benjamin Penhallow Shillaber was a Boston humorist and editor of The Carpet Bag, a New England humor magazine. This is a lengthy compilation of verse written from the viewpoint of Mrs. Partington, a comic alter-ego Shillaber introduced in the Boston Daily Post, and which he used frequently throughout his career. Apart from a few small dings and nicks to the edges and corners, and slight shelf curling on the head and heel of the spine, the book is in beautiful shape, the covers very clean, bright and clear, the binding tight, the top gilt still bright, no foxing or soiling in the text, and only the slightest touch of age browning towards the edges. A beautiful personally inscribed copy in extraordinary shape. In uncertain economic times, invest your hard-earned money in items of lasting value you can hold in hand and enjoy. Inscribed by Author(s).
