Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book takes a fascinating tour from the Straits of Malacca to the newly established British outpost of Singapore, delving into the tumultuous histories, vibrant cultures, and ever-changing politics of the region in the 1820s and 1830s. The author, a curious and highly observant tr…aveler, paints a vivid picture of the enormously diverse communities living on this crossroads of the world: from the proud postures of the Javanese, to the industrious nature of the Chinese, and the captivating aura of the Malays. The book describes the everyday occurrences of the region, from the plight of the native populations under colonial rule to the bombastic visits of the Governor-General aboard the impressive Enterprise steamboat. The author's descriptive prose expertly portrays the region's unique blend of harmonious coexistence and simmering tension, acting as a gateway into the region's rich and textured history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
