Spotting and offsetting to frontiis and title page. Corner missing from p9 which slightly impacts the text16mo., with 16 engravings on 4 plates, and 20 engraved illustrations in… the text, text lightly age-soiled throughout. From the 1820s until the sixty-sixth edition of 1842 the illustrations generally comprise a frontispiece (usually incorporating the title) and nine engraved plates illustrating cuts, carving and trussing. In the 'new' booksellers' edition of 1846 the frontispiece becomes a kitchen scene. This edition, produced in handy 'pocket' format, appears to be the first with the illustrations rearranged to show carving in the text, and the engravings of cuts and trussing presented in plate form, perhaps for greater clarity.

(lii) + 354pp. One plate (No. VII) missing, of the nine called for. Boards worn on edges, with surface rubbed all over; original spine missing; replacement spine…now becoming detached (could be glued, but maybe a more satisfactory solution could be found); first 3 leaves completely detached (1st leaf is covered with old writing in ink, a previous-owner's notes - dated 1833; there are also similar notes on 2 leaves to rear; writing hard to decipher but possibly of interest); for some reason, the words "formed upon" have been covered by a slip of paper glued to title-page - or possibly the page was torn and later repaired by pasting on the slip; pages darkened on edges, with perhaps half showing some spotting/foxing within; otherwise reasonably clean with text everywhere legible; apart from problems mentioned, binding sound throughout. Overall, a volume which shows plenty of evidence of age and use, but perhaps has so much the more charm for that. NB: An extra shipping charge may be requested for heavier or more valuable items.
