James Edward Preston Muddock also known as "Joyce Emmerson Preston Muddock" and "Dick Donovan" 1843 - 1934, was a prolific British journalist and autho…r of mystery and horror fiction. For a time his detective stories were as popular as those of Arthur Conan Doyle. Between 1889 and 1922 he published nearly 300 detective and mystery stories. Most of Muddock's stories featured his continuing character Dick Donovan, The Glasgow Detective, named for one of the 18th Century Bow Street Runners. The character was so popular that later stories were published under this pen name. Muddock also wrote true crime stories, horror, and 37 novels, most as "Dick Donovan". His stories were used by The Strand Magazine in months when there were no Sherlock Holmes stories available. Size is 185mm x 90mm. Condition is good. Light folding crease. Later edition. Most of the stories are cases of the celebrated Russian detective related to fellow detective Dick Don…ovan. The last story, "The Clue of the Dead Hand," features detective Peter Brodie who investigates a murder and a simultaneous mysterious disappearance in Scotland at Corbie Hall, "a strange, weird sort of place . [with] an eeriness about it that was calculated to make one shudder." This story belongs as much in the (rationalized) ghost story genre as the detective story. Whether writing under his own name or "Dick Donovan," Muddock had a long and successful career turning out popular fiction strong on adventure, crime, detection, sensation, and the supernatural. Wolff 4961 (calling for a blank leaf preceding the half title leaf, here excised by the binder). Several tiny spots to rear cover, a very good copy with bright cover stamping. A scarce book. First e…dition, first printing, later issue. Muddock's first collection of sensation fiction, twenty-two stories, most of which are supernatural. Published in June 1889 in boards for two shillings and in limp cloth for 2/6, this being one of the latter. The earliest copies have inserted publisher's catalogue dated April 1889. Better known under his later pseudonym, Dick Donovan, Muddock was prolific and successful, his career a mirror in some ways of his own wide and adventurous travels about the empire. "A natural storyteller, he had a strong narrative drive that was sometimes undermined by awkward, repetitious phraseology. Consequently, his Victorian ghost stories lack the subtlety of Le Fanu or Riddell, but they have a gruesome sense of fun." - Sullivan (ed), The Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the Supernatural, p. 130. In terms of rarity alone, the present collection certainly belongs in any top ten of Victorian supernatural collections, though his second collection, TALES OF TERROR, published ten years later, would not be far behind.
