Olvidado durante mucho tiempo, su figura dio lugar a controversia: unos vieron en él…una amenaza para el Estado mientras que otros se inspiraron en su pensamiento para llevar a cabo una transformación radical de la sociedad. Müntzer no se dio por satisfecho con la liberación interior del ser humano que predicaba Lutero, sino que estaba convencido de que la auténtica libertad se manifesta por mediación de una serie de realizaciones políticas. Por encima de todo fue un predicador radical del Evangelio, sin concesiones de ningún tipo a los que tenían en sus manos los mecanismos del poder. Para él era una evidencia indiscutible que la Buena Nueva se dirigía en primer término a los desheredados de este mundo, al «pobre pueblo», como acostumbra a decir. Para Engels y Kautsky la sublevación de los campesinos promovida por Müntzer constituye «una anticipación genial de la historia futura».
