First edition, signed limited issue, number 186 of 600 copies signed by Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe. This copy was presented to the leading British filmmaker Richard Attenborough by a patron of Zimbabwean art, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "Sir Richard & Lady Attenborough, A small gift to remind you from time to time of our beautiful country Zimbabwe. With every good wish, Norman Walden". The book is a lavish celebration of Zimbabwe's wildlife and people, richly illustrated with colour photographs throughout. In 1987, Richard Attenborough filmed Cry Freedom in Harare, Zimbabwe. Set in South Africa in 1977, the film carried a strong anti-apartheid message; Attenborough was unable to shoot there under the apartheid regime. Attenborough was then very positive towards Mugabe and Zimbabwe - in the film's accompanying book, he wrote, "Zimbabwe is the most beautiful country, with a warmth of hospitality. Anyone who doubts the ultimate viability of a multi-racial society should spend time in Zimbabwe. It seems to me that what they have achieved in a very short space of time under the leadership of their Prime Minister, Robert Mugabe, is little short of miraculous. The people and government gave us every possible help and I hope that this film's very existence becomes part of their protest against apartheid" (Attenborough, p. 14). Attenborough subsequently lost his faith in Mugabe and publicly criticized him, stating in an interview that "I thought Mugabe was the cat's whiskers at the time. Then Sally died and I think this drove him insane. I think he went mad, turned into a bastard" (interview in The Telegraph, 24 August 2014). Walden was chairman of the Nedlaw Group. "The longest standing and one of the most imaginative aspects of corporate patronage for the arts of Zimbabwe has come from the Nedlaw Group.
