Paperback. Condizione: Very good. 1. Pap. Minor shelf wear. Else very sound. It's been our distinct pleasure over the past few years to publish monographs on a select group of young architects and firms whose work represents the best of contemporary design thinking while retaining a distinctive regional sensibility. The Nova-Scotian architect Brian MacKay-Lyons fits neatly into this distinguished list, which includes Marlon Blackwell in the Ozarks, Rick Joy in the Southwest, andMiller/Hull in the Northwest. Those familiar with Nova Scotia understand the austere beauty of this Canadian landscape, with its wide open skies and rugged terrain pushing up against the Atlantic. MacKay-Lyons's work responds to this unique topography and to the vernacular building traditions that define its communities. His houses, commercial buildings, and public projects combine regional forms with local materials, technologies, and building practices to create works that are linked to their environments right down to their DNA.Peaked gables, shed roofs, and sliding doors are inspired by local barn types; corrugated metal cladding comes from the buildings used by the areas fishing industry; structural wooden frames are based on local ship-building traditions. These elements communicate a sense of place that is sophisticated, accessible, and free of sentimentality. Novelist and historian Malcolm Quantrill weaves together an intimate portrait of MacKay-Lyons and his work, elucidating the 'peculiar regionality' of his subject's architecture. A New Voices monograph published with The Graham Foundation. .

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The work of the award-winning architecture firm Bohlin Cywinski Jackson ranges greatly in scale and circumstance from private homes, large and small, to major university, public and cultural buildings. The nineteen projects featured celebrate this diversity and include the elegant retail stores for Apple in New York City, the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia, the Ballard Library in Seattle, the headquarters for Pixar Animation Studios in California and several extraordinary private residences in North America. The practice's architecture is alive to the subtleties of place, both man-made and natural, to the varied natures of people, to the sensibilities of individuals, to the character of institutions and to the rich possibilities of materials and the means of construction. Each project is extensively depicted in new color photography, evocative conceptual sketches, presentation drawings, and construction details. A foreword by Pritzker Prize winner Glenn Murcutt and essays by a select group of this country's most accomplished architects and writers accompany this handsome volume. ILLUSTRATIONS: 530 colour & 40 b/w photographs 165 illustrations A range of projects by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson have carried out, illustrated with sketches, drawings and photographs. Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Gut. Pages unnumbered. Good condition. -- Glenn Murcutt's houses bring the minimalist Miesian pavilion and the primitive hut into a new and peculiarly Australian synthesis. The three houses covered in this volume chart the development of his architectural thought. The Marie Short house, with its shed-like appearance, is an early instance of Murcutt's interest in deceptively primitive form. Despite its tough exterior, the timber-lined interior of the building is a masterpiece of delicacy and warmth. The Ball-Eastaway house, designed for two artists as a gallery and dwelling, develops this sophistico-primitive aesthetic further. Clad entirely in corrugated steel, the building stands like a spaceship in the sparse bush, its smooth white interior an absolute refuge from the baked rock plateau on which it has landed. The Magney house, with its airy, expressionistic roof, marks a new level of confidence and maturity. All three houses demonstrate an alliance between the primitive and the refined that is characteristic of Murcutt's work. ISBN 0714828750 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
