Trade Paperback. Condizione: Used - Very Good. The writings of graphic designer, prolific critic, and avant-garde partisan Karel Teige (1900-1951) represent one of the great forgotten legacies of modern artistic theory. Appearing now for the first time in English as Modern Architecture in Czechoslovakia, Teige's original work is supplemented here by a selection of his other writings on art and architecture. An introduction by Jean-Louis Cohen vividly traces the diverse pursuits of this multifaceted figure. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Hailed by the poet and architectural historian Sir John Betjeman as "a genius at photography", Edwin Smith (1912 - 1971) was one of Britain's foremost photographers. At the time of his death he was widely regarded as without peer in his sensitive renditions of historic architecture and his empathetic evocations of place. The recurrent themes of Smith's work - a concern for the fragility of the environment; an acute appreciation of the need to combat cultural homogenization by safeguarding regional diversity; and a conviction that architecture should be rooted in time and place - are as pressing today as when Smith first framed them in his elegant compositions. By providing the first in-depth survey of his work, this book introduces Smith's poignant imagery to a new generation. This paperback edition accompanies the RibA exhibition at 66 Portland Place, London, entitled A Vanishing Past: The Photography of Edwin Smith, 11 September 2014 to 13 December 2014. The exhibition will then travel to the Mann Island Gallery in Liverpool in 2016.

Paperback. Pictorial stiff wraps with red and black lettering and French flaps; xv, 179 pages. Profusely illustrated in bw and color. Issued in connection with an exhibition held Apr. 2-Aug. 1, 2010, Morgan Library & Museum, New York, Jan. 27-May 1, 2011, Milwaukee Art Museum, Milwaukee, WI, and Sept. 29-Dec. 31, 2011, Heinz Architectural Center, Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA. This catalogue of the Palladio and His Legacy exhibition, centred on original drawings and books by the most significant and influential architect in the western world, Andrea Palladio (1508-80), examines his personal development and architecture, his influence on others achieved through his I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura, the subsequent dissemination of his teachings through translations and pattern books in Britain and America, and the influence of Palladianism on architecture in the New World. The promulgation of Palladian principles resulted in new and original interpretations that took firm hold in America, influencing both grand formal buildings and smaller utilitarian structures. The drawings are supported by numerous architectural models. Three large examples--the Pantheon, Villa Rotunda, and Jefferson's unrealized design for the White House--programmatically illustrate the journey from Rome to America. Smaller models along with rare architectural texts and pattern books, through which Palladio's ideas were primarily transmitted, reinforce the themes of the book. VG (Wraps are lightly edgeworn/scuffed/smudged; interior is clean; binding is solid.).
