Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Lovely 1873 1st edition hardcover in original pictorial rust cloth with gilt lettering and illustrations on spine and top cover, illustrated frontispiece and fourteen black and white plates, 480pp. Spine cracks, joints a bit wobbly, light color loss at beveled edges but no rub through, moderate foxing on preliminaries, on art plates & tissues and occasionally in the text, yet this is the nicest copy we've seen in 25+ years of bookselling. Dedicated to Ulysses S. Grant, this work offers a comprehensive review of the care of the domestic horse. The book also includes an introduction by Henry Ward Beecher and a treatise on "Agriculture and the Horse" by George B. Loring.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. The 8 lectures are individually titled as follows (with pagination): Condition and Prospects of Victoria, as Compared with Older Lands, A Lecture Delivered at the Princess Theatre, Melbourne, on May 3, 1869, Being the First of a Course of Lectures Under the Auspices of the Early Closing Association, by H.J. Wrixon (24pp); The Order and Plan of Creation (Two Lectures. First Lecture Delivered at the Princess Theatre, on Monday, June 28, 1869. Second Lecture Delivered at the Duke of Edinburgh Theatre, Monday, July 4, 1870), by Professor McCoy, of the Melbourne University (32pp); History: A Lecture Delivered in the Duke of Edinburgh Theatre, Melbourne, on 11th July, 1870, by The Rev. A.M. Henderson (President of the Congressional College of Victoria) (32pp); The Progress of Astronomy: A Lecture, Delivered in the Duke of Edinburgh Theatre, on the 25th July, 1870, by R.L.J. Ellery (Government Astronomer) (19pp); Creation versus Development: A Lecture Delivered at the Duke of Edinburgh Theatre, on Monday, 8th August, 1870, by the Rev. J.E. Bromby (Principal of the Church of England Grammar School) (23pp); Political Progress, its Tendency and Limit, A Lecture Delivered at the Duke of Edinburgh Theatre, on Monday, 22nd August, 1870, by H.J. Wrixon (Solicitor-General of Victoria) (19pp); Parliaments, Elections and Candidates: A Lecture Delivered at the Duke of Edinburgh Theatre, on Monday, 5th September, 1870, by R. Murray Smith (24pp); Beyond the Grave: A Lecture Delivered at the Town Hall, on Tuesday, 15th November, 1870, by the Rev. J.E. Bromby (Principal of the Church of England Grammar School) (24pp). A very SCARCE series of lectures issued together under the one banner title. From the introduction: "The first lecture in this volume inaugurated the winter series, 1869, and was published in pamphlet form, but met with so limited a sale, that it was considered inexpedient to continue the experiment. Considerable disappointment and dissatisfaction having been expressed, at the the non-publication of the whole of the first series, the Committee determined to make arrangements for publishing each lecture of the winter series, 1870". With "Typographical Errors" errata sheet bound in prior to the "Creation versus Development" lecture. "The Early Closing Association was a Victorian organisation formed by retail workers in the 1850s who attempted to improve their working conditions. One of their goals was to legislate shop closing times. Instead of petitioning the government, going on strike or protesting in the street, retail workers tried to persuade the public and shop owners that shorter hours would be best for everyone. They called this 'moral suasion' and they relied on people supporting shorter shopping hours out of the goodness of their hearts. Eventually, the Early Closing Association called on the government to limit shop trading hours." Bound in original brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine, blind-ruled borders to covers, original plain brown endpapers. Spine title: "Lectures - Early Closing Associ.n". Slight shelfwear, soiling to covers (mainly rear), hinges tender, minimal foxing, remnant of small label to front pastedown, otherwise a nice clean tight solid hardcover copy of an uncommon book.
