Versucht man, ihre Schätze zu einer Gesamtschau zusammenzufassen, entrollt sich ein Panorama vielfältigen künstlerischen Schaffens, das in Werken der Kleinkunst wie der Monumentalarchitektur, der Malerei wie der Plastik fast sechstausend Jahre kuhurgeschichtlicher Entwicklung von der westlichen Peripherie Europas bis zum fernen Ostasien widerspiegelt. Schon 1830 bezeichnete Friedrich Waagen, der erste Direktor der Gemäldegalerie, die »Gewährung ästhetischen Genusses und Belehrung« als Hauptaufgaben der damals gerade gegründeten Berliner Museen. Heute steht das Bemühen, jede Kunstäußerung aus ihrer Entstehungszeit heraus verständlich zu machen, mehr - denn je im Vordergrund der Museumsarbeit. Einem solchen Anliegen entsprang die Absicht des langjährigen Generaldirektors der Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin, Professor Gerhard Rudolf Meyer, diese Schatzkammer der Kunst in einem Bildband durch erlesene Aufnahmen im Verein mit eingehenden Bildbeschreibangen vorzustellen, ein Vorhaben, das der namhafte Wissenschaftler und Museumsfachmann kurz vor seinem Tod 1977 in Angriff nahm. Seine Frau Katharina Meyer vollendete es gemeinsam mit einem großen Kollektiv von Museumsmitarbeitern. Die Vielzahl und der Reichtum der Sammlungen erschwerten die Auswahl der Objekte, die dieser Band dem Leser nahebringen will. Nicht allein die weltweit bekannten, schon durch ihre museale Einmaligkeit faszinierenden Kunstgüter wie der Große Altar von Pergamon sollen gewürdigt werden, sondern auch Meisterwerke der Kleinkunst, deren verborgene Schönheit sich nur dem aufmerksamen Betrachter erschließt. Eine Begrenzung auf zehn Bildteile war unerläßlich. Diese Bildteile erfassen das Ägyptische Museum mit der Papyrussammlung, das Vorderasiatische und das Islamische Museum, die Antikensammlung, das museum für Ur- und Frühgeschichte, die Frühchristlich-byzantinische und die Ostasiatische Sammlung, die Gemäldegalerie, die Skulpturensammlung und die Nationalgalerie. Außerhalb des Betrachtungsfeldes mußte das Kunstgewerbemuseum bleiben, das 1963 im Schloß Köpenick eine dem Charakter der Ausstellungsstücke entsprechende Heimstätte erhalten hat.
