Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. The public image of Elgar as patriotic country squire was established in his lifetime, but, in reality, it concealed a highly complex, sometimes baffling, private individual. Although acquaintances found him a man of endless curiosity and good humour, his family and close friends knew him to be rather different: a prey to despair, neurotically mistrustful both of himself and of those who loved him and so damaged by the condescension and neglect of his early years that emotionally he never recovered. This is a reissue of the third edition of Michael Kenedy's portrait of this complexman - not an analytical survey of the music but a faithful likeness of the composer, recognizable, but at the same time a thoroughly individual interpretation of the subject. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Fine. New York, December 11, 1976., 1976. Fine. - Several paragraphs typed on 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide light creamy white paper. The dance & music critic Bert Wechsler writes asking City Center producer Jean Dalrymple's opinion as to a letter he "received from the NYS Council on the Arts. I thought you might be interested in seeing it. It confuses me in several ways." Many people, including Hugh Southern and Martin Segal, had assisted him and "On the day the enclosed letter was written, I spoke with Mrs. Hart's secretary. She told me only 2 positions had been filled at the time." Though not stated, it seems from his letter that he was told his application for a position had likely been turned down as all positions had been filled. Signed "Bert". Folded for mailing with some minor creases at the bottom. Else fine. The dance & music critic Bert Wechsler (1933-1997) had performed as an actor and singer before turning to writing. He worked as the editor of Music Journal in the 1980's as well as several newspapers and magazines. Wechsler was also the founding critic and reporter for the New York Theater Wire and co-wrote "Dear Rogue", a biography of the baritone Lawrence Tibbett. The recipient, Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jos Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.…

Inscribed "To Seymour Halpern wishing him all good", signed in full "Robert Hichens". Folded for mailing with a couple of short tears to the bottom edge and some light staining to the edges. Good. The English journalist and novelist Robert Hichens (1864-1950) was also a music lyricist and music critic. Known as a satirist of the "Naughty Nineties", he collaborated on successful plays and also wrote short stories. The recipient Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. …

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover with Dust Jacket. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fair. First Edition, First Printing. A seminal record-collecting manual from the foundational era of music criticism, signed by one of the 20th century's most influential and uncompromising critics.? This work represents a primary document in the history of recorded sound, offering a rigorous dual guide to both the compositions and the technical fidelity of early 78-rpm discs. Published at a time when the phonograph was transitioning from a novelty to a serious instrument for scholarship, Haggin's analysis remains a vital benchmark for the evolution of classical and jazz discography. KEY FEATURES? +++ Physical: Full navy cloth with gilt-stamped spine; bindings are tight and square. Features the original Art Deco-influenced typographic dust jacket design. Oxford University Press, New York, 1938; First Printing. +++ Specs: 7.5 x 5 inches; xii, 164 pages. +++ Content: Comprehensive critical survey of the 1930s recording catalog, including early electrical recordings and technical assessments of audio quality.? +++ Signed by the author, B.H. Haggin, in blue ink on the front free endpaper. CONDITION:? Good / Fair +++ THE BOOK: The bindings are tight and square, holding the text block firmly. The internal pages are clean and free of markings, showing only light, even age-toning consistent with 1930s paper stock. There is moderate shelf handling wear to the cloth extremities. +++ DUST JACKET: The dust jacket is present and shows wear consistent with its age, including a scuff on the lower front panel and fraying at the spine tips. There are chips along the upper rear edge and two small pieces of clear tape applied to the jacket surface. The jacket is now preserved in a new, clear Mylar archival protective sleeve. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE -- B.H. Haggin was a towering figure in American music criticism, known for his long tenure at 'The Nation' and his close association with Arturo Toscanini. This volume was his first book-length effort to systematize the chaotic world of 78-rpm record collecting. At the time of publication in 1938, recorded sound was still a relatively young phenomenon. This guide functioned as both a consumer advocate and a scholarly apparatus, helping a new generation of listeners navigate the complexities of electrical recording vs. acoustic recording. Beyond its technical utility, the book reflects a critical moment in the democratization of high culture, as Haggin sought to provide the public with the tools to build world-class music libraries in their own homes. SCHOLARLY FEATURES +++ Critical Methodology: Documents Haggin?s signature 'objective' style, which prioritize the musical score and technical execution over the personality of the performer. +++ Discographical History: Serves as a 'census' of the 1938 recording market, capturing the state of the industry just before the introduction of the LP. +++ Influence: Haggin?s work here laid the groundwork for modern record review publications like 'The Gramophone' and 'High Fidelity'. SUBJECTS: Music Criticism, Discography, 1930s Recording Industry, B.H. Haggin, Classical Music History, Jazz Records. Signed First Edition, Association Copies, Reference Works.…

In his letter addressed to James B. Pond, Wheeler writes that Mr. Gatti-Casazza "will be very happy to serve as a member of the honorary reception committee, under the chairmanship of Mr. Otto H. Kahn, which is to welcome M. Maeterlinck". Signed in full "Edward Ziegler". The letter is folded horizontally and vertically for mailing with a hole punched out at top left. The bottom of the letter has been unevenly clipped. Very good. The American music critic and opera manager Edward Ziegler (1870-1947) began his career as assistant music critic at the New York Sun. He worked as a critic for various newspapers before becoming the Metropolitan Opera's administrative secretary in 1916. He was subsequently engaged as assistant general manager to Giulio Gatti-Casazza and supervised most of the administrative and financial operations of the company. Ziegler also scouted Europe for new talent and organized the radio broadcasts of the company's opera productions.James B. Pond, the American impresario and lecture agent who headed the J.B. Pond Lyceum Bureau, brought the great Belgian poet Maurice Maeterlinck to America for a series of lectures. The first lecture took place at Carnegie hall on January 2nd, 1920. Unfortunately Maeterlinck failed to carry out his intention to lecture in English because of his labored "phonetic" English. He declared his intention to continue his lectures in French and have the translation read by another person. As a result, the lecture tour was a failure and lawsuits ensued on both sides. …
