Juli 1948). - Werner Reinhold Näf (geb. 1894, St. Gallen, gest. 1959, Gümligen): «Geschichtsstud. an den Univ. Genf, Zürich und München, dort 1917 Promotion. Mittelschullehrer in St. Gallen, Dozent an der Handelshochschule, 1925 o. Prof. für allg. Geschichte an der Univ. Bern. N. veröffentlichte 1923 eine Biografie des radikalen sankt-gall. Staatsmanns Basil Ferdinand Curti und schuf mit seinem Werk "Vadian und seine Stadt St. Gallen" (2 Bde., 1944-57) dem schweiz. Humanisten ein literar. Denkmal. Auf den Boden der europ. Geschichte begab er sich mit den Monografien über Bismarcks Aussenpolitik (1925) und über die Kriegsursachen von 1914 (1932). Das zweibändige Werk "Die Epochen der neueren Geschichte" (1945-46, 21959-60) stellte einen schweiz. Ausblick auf die Universalhistorie dar. N. vertrat immer die organ. Einheit von schweiz. und allg. Geschichte und forderte sowohl eine europäisch geweitete Schweizergeschichte als auch eine schweizerisch beleuchtete Weltgeschichte. Immer stärker rückte in N.s Geschichtsbetrachtung das abstrakte Element in den Vordergrund, der Denker und Erklärer, der von den Personen zu den Ideen, vom Besonderen zum Allgemeinen hin leitete. In seinen Schriften und Vorträgen behandelte er nun den Staat und die Staatstheorie sowie schliesslich auch "Das Überstaatliche in der Geschichte" (1952). Mit seiner Denkschrift "Wesen und Aufgabe der Universität" (1950) setzte N. sich für das 1954 verabschiedete Berner Universitätsgesetz ein. Vizepräs. des Forschungsrats des Schweiz. Nationalfonds, Mitglied der Hist. Kommission der Bayer. Akademie der Wissenschaften» (HLS).
