He was commissioned into the 12th Foot, later the Suffolk Regiment, in 1852 and from the point of view of his future career he was fortunate to see plenty of active service in his early years - Second Burma War, Crimea, Indian Mutiny and Second China War. He was in Canada for the better part of ten years and in 1870 he was given command of the Red River expedition; this period in Canada enhanced his reputation considerably. He was very much involved in furthering the aims of the Cardwell reforms of 1871-73. He commanded the expedition to Ashanti in 1873, went to S Africa to restore the position after Isandhlwana . The first part of this memoir which covered his career to 1878 was published in that year, this updated or second edition again covers that period and continues the story to the end of the 1882 expedition to Egypt to relieve Gordon, concluding with the battle of Tel-el-Kebir.

First edition, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "B. V. Slater, with the best regards of N. I. Low, London 7/12/56". Published shortly after the Second World War, this work records experiences of Singapore under the Japanese occupation, including daily life during the war, guerrilla resistance, collaboration and survival under the Japanese administration, and the aftermath of liberation. The book preserves a number of contemporary accounts from wartime Singapore, including the return of women forcibly sent to Japanese military "comfort stations" in Indonesia. The subtitle, (Our City of Dreadful Nights), echoes Rudyard Kipling's The City of Dreadful Night (1888). B. V. Slater was a classicist who edited the Oxford Latin Dictionary in 1947-49. Small octavo. With 4 half-tone plates. Original light blue boards, front board lettered in black. Numbered in manuscript on front free endpaper. Binding extremities toned, spine lightly worn, light damp stains to front board and head of a few leaves, book block shaken. A very good copy.

With an illustration of the apparatus in the text. First printing of these two milestone papers in Low-temperature Chemistry. This process of liquefaction of oxygene was achieved independently, in the same year, by Cailletet and Pictet, using different methods. Cailletet used the Joule-Thomson effect" oxygen was cooled while highly compressed, then allowed to rapidly expand, cooling it further, resulting in the production of small droplets of liquid oxygen. Pictet's method was more elaborate, using compounds pumps.
