Nägeli's (1817-91) micella theory, once popular, then regarded as too speculative and replaced with Bütschli's theory, came much later with the support of ultramicroscopic X-ray investigations, to be shown as applicable in some cases. These studies demonstrated that micells, are sometimes 'giant molecules'. "According to this theory the cells and their derivatives are composed of a number of particles called 'micellae', which are supposed to be composed of a number of molecules, possess a regular crystalline form, and in a dry state keep close to one another, owing to their mutual attraction; in certain circumstances, however, micellae attract water, which penetrates in between them and surround each one of them, and through this action arises tissue."
