These sheets constitute the first 'preliminary edition' of this map, which continued to be the standard map of Nantucket by the Geological Survey until 1919. A Closer Look The right covers most of Nantucket Island, including the town of Nantucket, from Great Neck to the Atlantic. It identifies topographical features such as the Shawkemo Hills, Alter Rock Hills, Folgers Hill, Gibbs Pond, Mioxes Pond, Miacomet Pond, and the Head of Hummunock. It also notes the various roads traversing the islands and the narrow-gauge Nantucket Railroad between the town of Nantucket and Siasconsett. The Sankaty Head Lighthouse, Nantucket Cliff Beacons, Brant Point Lighthouse, and Nantucket Lighthouse at Great Point are all labeled. The left sheet includes Muskeget Island, Tuckernuck Island, and the western parts of Nantucket. Together, the map offers copious topographical detail and some submarine detail, as well as towns, roads, and some individual buildings. Hard to believe given its current status as a highly desirable tourist destination, Nantucket was suffering from hard times when this map was produced. The whaling industry that had been the mainstay of the island's economy in the early 19th century had died out and the harbor had silted up. But these difficulties were a blessing in disguise, as the island's hardy historic structures were not bulldozed for modern development, preserving them for posterity. Publication History and Census Surveyed in 1887 and prepared by Henry Gannett, Marcus Baker, and E. B. Clark, this 'preliminary edition' map of Nantucket are among the most sought after topographical maps produced by the U.S. Geological Survey. The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection includes the map, also marked 'preliminary edition', as it appeared as sheets 49 and 53 in the 1890 Atlas of Massachusetts from topographical surveys (also previously sold by us). A charming 1902 map of Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and other points along the coast of Massachusetts, published by George H. Walker and Company. Rich in information, it focuses in particular on cycling routes, reflecting the boom in recreational cycling in the preceding years. A Closer Look The map depicts the region from New Bedford east to the Atlantic Ocean and from Duxbury and Provincetown south to Nantucket. Cycling routes are traced in red, with further connections to Boston, Quincy, Taunton, and Fall River suggested, indicating the main selling point of the map. Other roads, railroad lines, and ferry and steamship lines are also noted, providing comprehensive transportation information to the traveler and local alike. Town borders are outlined in orange. Waterways, swamps, shoals, and other maritime and coastal features are also illustrated. The Bicycle Boom Though invented in the early 19th century, bicycles only became commercially accessible and popular in the closing decades of the 19th century. A range of innovations made the machines more reliable, safe, comfortable, and affordable, and they became fashionable for their applications in transportation, leisure, and sport on both sides of the Atlantic. As would later happen with automobiles, cycling clubs sprang up to scour best routes, advocate for improved roads, and connect enthusiasts (for instance, the Massachusetts Bicycle Club was founded in 1879 in Boston). Cycling was particularly popular among women, as it provided freedom of movement and association (the sexes could intermingle without parental oversight). With regard to the present map, the quaint small towns and seaside roads of Cape Cod, Nantucket, and Martha's Vineyard were especially well-suited for bicycles. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by George H. Walker and Company in 1902, updating an earlier 1892 map. Yale University and the American Antiquarian Society list the 1892 edition among their holdings, but we are unable to locate any examples of the 1902 edition in institutional collections or on the market. …

Very good. Old repair to margin tear on verso. Size 9 x 14.25 Inches. This attractive c. 1886 map is a reduced version of Reverend F. C. Ewers important 1869 map of Nantucket. It was issued to promote the Old Colony Line, the 'Shortest, Quickest, Best, and Only Direct Route between Boston or New York and Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard.' A Closer Look Printed in Nantucket, this variant was issued by the Old Colony Line in various formats from roughly 1872 to 1889. The map includes a textual timeline of Nantucket from its discovery by Bartholomew Gosnold in 1602 to the laying of the first communications cables between Nantucket and the mainland in 1886 - hence our dating. The Ewer Map The Nantucket historian Joseph Garver provides an excellent description Ewer's map provides a detailed synopsis of Nantucket's history, beginning with Gosnold's sighting of the island in 1602. The chronological table identifies the major stages in Nantucket's development - its early settlement and land divisions, the evolution from shore to deep-sea whaling, the establishment of religious and educational institutions, and the development of the transportation network connecting Nantucket with the mainland (and Nantucketers with one another). Ewer also notes events that marked the transition from one era to the next - the first island whaler to seek its prey in the Pacific (1791), the death of the last Indian (1822), the great fires of 1836 and 1846, and the first gaslight in 1854. In a more graphic form, the map indicates the sites of old settlements and burial grounds, as well as the boundaries of sachem rights, the former shoreline, old fishing stages, and whaling stations. (Garver, G. Surveying the Shore , p. 115.) The Present Map The present map follows the updates and modifications to the Ewer plan introduced by J. B. Swain in or around 1886. Swain's revisions of the large-scale original were intended for a reissue promoting the Hotel Nantucket, shown here on Brant Point. The hotel was a response to growing 'summering' interest in Nantucket and was the first major hotel on the island. We know Swain was a Nantucket hotelier in his final years, so his association with the Hotel Nantucket, while not fully verified, is almost certain. We also know that the hotel was built on 'Society of Friends' land, and that Swain was closely associated with the 'Friends' in Nantucket. In any case, Swain massively revised the Ewer map. He further updated it to reflect recent changes on the island, including the construction of the Hotel Nantucket, the Nantucket Railroad from the harbor to Surfside and on to Siasconset, and life-saving stations at Coskata and Muskeget Island. He also notes, in 1877, the 'Great Temperance Movement.' The table of historical events has been updated to 1886 and reflects these and other developments. Old Colony Line The Old Colony Line was a subsidiary of the Old Colony Railroad, which from 1844, developed and operated a rail line between Boston and Plymouth. By acquiring or merging with its competitors, the Old Colony Railroad became the dominant railroad in southeastern Massachusetts. They expanded their network with steamship service between New York City and Fall River. In 1872, they inaugurated the Old Colony Line, a steamer between Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. The Old Colony Railroad was acquired in 1893 by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad. Some of the railroads established by the Old Colony Railroad remain in operation to this day, among them the Old Colony and Newport Railway. Publication History and Census This map has a complex, confusing, and little-researched publication history. It was originally drawn and published by Ferdinand Cartwright Ewer in 1869. That edition was large, measuring more than 40 inches wide. It was reissued around 1886 for the opening of the Nantucket Hotel. This is considered the largest and best bird's-eye view of Nantucket. It emerged as the city was transitioning from a maritime whaling hub to a resort economy. A Closer Look The view looks southwest on Nantucket, showcasing the bustling harbor, rolling hills, and the sea beyond. Some 36 buildings are identified according to the numbered key at the base. These include eights 'Houses' (early large guest houses or hotels). Four of these, Ocean House, Sherburne House, Springfield House, and Ocean View House, Sconset Beach, are illustrated - likely paid placements. In addition, there are various churches, municipal structures, schools, and points of interest, such as the 'Old Mill, Built 1745' and 'Oldest House, Built 1686'. Nantucket Harbor fills the foreground, with pleasure-boats far exceeding commercial vessels. The sidewheel steamer 'River Queen' prominently navigates into the harbor. The 'River Queen' was then being run by the New Bedford, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket Steamboat Company, but in this case, it may reference use of the steamer to visit Nantucket by Ulysses S. Grant in 1874. In the upper right corner are smaller inset views of Siasconset and the Sankaty Head Light House. Historical Context In 1881, Nantucket, an island off the coast of Massachusetts, was past its prime as a leading global whaling hub, but the town was fast pivoting towards tourism. The island's picturesque landscapes, historic homes, and seaside charm attracted visitors, leading to the establishment of hotels, guest houses, and an infrastructure to support a burgeoning tourist industry. This transformation marked the beginning of Nantucket's emergence as a beloved summer destination for the elite, many of whom constructed grand residences in town and elsewhere on the island. American Bird's-Eye City Views The Bird's-Eye view industry emerged in the United States in the middle part of the 19th century and coincided with the commercial development of lithographic printing. Before the rise of lithography, the ability to own and display artwork in the home was largely limited to the extremely wealthy, but the advent of lithographic printing made it possible for everyone to own visually striking artwork. A robust trade developed in portraits of political leaders, allegorical and religious images, and city views. City views were being produced in the United States as early as the 1830s, but the genre exploded after the American Civil War (1861 - 1865). Bridging the gap between maps and pictures, most 19th century American bird's-eye views presented cities to the public from highpoints. Some were imagined, but others were drawn from hot-air balloons or nearby hills. The presentation, combining high elevation, commercial interest, and new printing technology created a uniquely American artform, as described by historian Donald Karshan, Some print connoisseurs believe that it was only with the advent of the full-blown city-view lithograph that American printmaking reached its first plateau of originality, making a historical contribution to the graphic arts. They cite the differences between the European city-view prints and the expansive American version that reflects a new land and a new attitude toward the land. The vogue for bird's-eye city views lasted from about 1845 to 1920, during which period some 2,400 cities were thus portrayed, some multiple times. Although views were produced in many urban centers, the nexus of view production in the United States was Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The major American viewmakers were Stoner, Wellge, Bailey, Fowler, Hill Ruger, Koch, Burleigh, Norris, and Morse, among others. Fine. Size 22.25 x 30.25 Inches. A charming 1973 pictorial view of Nantucket, Massachusetts, produced by Mickey Shemin and Henry Royster. Employing Shemin's distinctive style, the view evokes 19th-century city views, though representing the island as it was in 1973. A Closer Look Oriented towards the southwest, this view focuses on the town of Nantucket, the main settlement on the eponymous island. Local businesses, churches, museums, wharves, and historical sites are labeled throughout. Art galleries and antique shops are especially well-represented, likely a reflection of the creators' allegiances. The smaller town of 'Sconset (Siasconset) on the easternmost part of the island is illustrated in an inset at the bottom-left. Various landmarks around the island, including lighthouses, ships, and historic structures, surround the main view in the border, along with a map of the entire island on the right. Characteristic of Shemin's work, the view is printed on parchment paper meant to look aged and is reminiscent of 19th-century city views, replete with horse-drawn carriages and a wide, ornate border. Publication History and Census This view was drawn by Mickey Shemin in 1973 and distributed by Henry Royster, a local publisher. It was printed in two runs, one on off-white paper and the other on yellowish paper; some of the former are individually numbered up to the full run of 300 prints. The only institution known to hold the view is the Boston Public Library and it is scarce to the market. Size 38.75 x 27.5 Inches. This is an uncommon 1883 U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey nautical chart or maritime map of Nantucket, Massachusetts. The map depicts from Hyannis to Chatham Port and south to include most of Nantucket Island to Old Man's Shoal, with the exception of the western-most part of the island, which extends beyond the map's scope. Primarily concerned with coastal information, the map nonetheless offers detail throughout with topography extending several miles inland. Nantucket is illustrated with full topography. Countless depth soundings appear throughout, and the region's lighthouses, bells, and light boats are highlighted. In addition, a wealth of practical information for the mariner is included: sailing instructions, tidal notes, and information concerning lighthouses and beacons. Publication History and Census This chart was first issued under A. D. Bache in 1866, with the present example being updated under C. P. Patterson to 1883. Unlike many Coast Survey charts, the present map is a separate issue and a working maritime chart. Examples of previous and subsequent editions of this chart are cataloged in OCLC, but none dating from 1883 appear in the database.…
