Egli racconta la sua esperienza in prima persona e a diversi livelli: reale, simbolico, psichico, e anche strettamente letterario. Seguiamo gli alti e bassi di questa giornata, importante per il protagonista perche l'appuntamento con Mira e, ne piu ne meno, un appuntamento con la realta, e dovrebbe farlo "sbucare dall'altra parte dell'adolescenza". Dovrebbe essere cioe come un rito iniziatico per superare il cerchio egocentrico del personaggio ed entrare nel mondo dialettico dell'uomo che riconosce se stesso negli altri. L'incontro avviene nelle forme e col rituale prevedibile, ma ben presto Mira pianta in asso il protagonista per andarsene con Walter. Istintivamente essa ha avvertito tutta l'inconsistenza del rapporto appena iniziato, e lo respinge. L'impazienza del protagonista e infatti solo una smania di affrettare il tempo, una fuga in avanti che per essere soltanto mentale si risolve in un giro a vuoto e non riesce mai ad afferrare l'oggetto del suo desiderio. La chiusura del libro e uguale all'inizio, il giorno successivo sara dunque un altro giorno d'impazienza. Cosi la circolarita del romanzo sta a rappresentare anche formalmente lo scacco del protagonista e insieme la sua acquisita ma non ancora operante consapevolezza della necessita di uscire da quel "mondo mentale" che, lasciato solo, "mente monumentalmente" - com'e scritto nel - l'epigrafe. [From front flap] Questo romanzo breve e stato scritto da Raffaele La Capria per la prima volta tra il '50 e il '51, e fu la sua rivelazione di narratore. A piu di venticinque anni di distanza, La Capria ha deciso di riscriverlo senza pero travalicarne i limiti o trasformarne la struttura. Dice l'autore di aver voluto diradare parecchie zone oscure nel testo originario. Dunque nel suo passato : infatti la ragione fondamentale di una riscrittura e la visitazione interiore dei luoghi decisivi per la propria formazione di scrittore e di uomo, la necessita di attraversare ancora, servendosi del linguaggio narrativo, quello stesso territorio che sembrava, per mezzo di un romanzo compiuto, esplorato per sempre, una volta per tutte. Mentre cosi non e, ne puo essere. Che succede all'autore quando si rimette sulle tracce di un io che e il protagonista e insieme il punto di vista di un suo racconto? Che puo succedere, in altre parole, a mettersi in navigazione in un mare tanto periglioso quanto quello di una riscrittura? I casi sono due : o si fa naufragio oppure si scopre un territorio prima ignorato, si scopre cioe che quello che si voleva raccontare, quello che si voleva sapere, era ed e un'altra cosa.
