Tirage à part très rare. Ce travail pionnier fut très remarqué et analysé dans de nombreuses revues françaises et étrangères dès sa publication (cf. par exemple Lancet, 1845, II, 3-6). Après un chapitre d'historique, Natalis Guillot rapporte les résultats des recherches chimiques et anatomo-pathologiques qu'il réalisa sur des poumons "chargés de matière noire". Il arrive à la conclusion qu'il s'agit essentiellement de charbon. Il décrit les modifications bronchiques et vasculaires secondaires aux dépôts d'anthracose, y compris lorsqu'il existe des lésions tuberculeuses associées. La dernière partie de ce mémoire est consacrée à la séméiologie ; douze observations anatomo-cliniques sont rapportées. Natalis Guillot (1804-1866) fut médecin des hôpitaux et professeur de pathologie médicale à la Faculté de médecine de Paris. Il était lors de cette étude médecin de l'Hospice de la Vieillesse (Bicêtre). REFERENCES: Rosen G : The history of miner¿s diseases, 298, 315, 316, 332, 340 : "In 1845 Guillot gave a detailed account of his researchers on the accumulation of carbon in the pulmonary organs of elderly men. Although he also included certain clinical observations in his papers, Guillot was chiefly concerned with the black masses found in the lungs. He examined these concretions chemically and arrived at the conclusion that they consist chiefly of carbon. He explains the accumulation of the carbonaceous material as the result of minute deposits of carbon through the individual¿s entire life. This carbon is a waste by-product, so to speak, of the act of respiration, and is thus ultimately endogenous in origin. In addition to his chemical analysis he also subjected the black masses to microscopic examination. Guillot is convinced beyond any doubt that the black masses act mechanically in the lungs. They press upon the smaller branches of the veins and arteries and obliterate them. This is clearly shown by injecting the vessels. In addition to these observations Guillot also reported the clinical findings in thirteen cases of this kind. While Guillot's investigations were not directly concerned with miners, they are important in this connection for they were A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE PATHOLOGICAL HISTOLOGY OF BLACK LUNGS SIMILAR TO THOSE FOUND IN COAL MINERS. Guillot's work was widely accepted in France.
