Sein Lebenswerk "atmet ganz und gar den Geist Pestalozzis . In seiner Methodik des Schulgesanges stand er den Grundsätzen der Pestalozzi-Schüler T. Pfeifer und H. G. Nägeli nahe. Im Unterschied zu Nägeli bezog er jedoch das Lied sowie Melodieerfindungen in den Unterrichtsgang mit ein. Auch zum Spiel mit Volksmusikinstrumenten wurden die Kinder angeregt. Die Verwirklichung von Natorps einflußreichem Gedankengut erstreckte sich in gleicher Weise auf die Lehrerausbildung in den Seminaren wie unmittelbar auf die Volksschulpraxis.
