Each volume with smaller sectional sheets… bound in, all in Neander's hand in brown ink. Vol. 2 dated Berlin, June 1826 and Vol. 3 is signed and dated by Neander, Berlin, July 19, 1827. (A second revised edition of the first volume was published by Neander in 1843). Known as the father of modern Church history, August Neander was born in a Jewish household and was named David Mendel. He converted to Christianity as a teenager and changed his name to Johann August Wilhelm Neander (after his beloved teacher, Johann Gottfried Gurlitt, 1754-1827 and his two friends, August Varnhagen and Wilhelm Neumann and adopted the surname Neander, or 'new man'). See McClintock and Strong Biblical Cyclopedia. Offered here is the original manuscript of August Neander's landmark magnum opus (Allgemeine Geschichte der Christlichen Religion und Kirche), with over 1,600 pages in his unmistakable handwriting. Uniformly bound in modern specked boards with gilt lettered spine labels. Leaves toned at margins, with damp stains to lower margins. Still very good. The Berlin ecclesiastical historian, August Neander, developed a religiously driven conception of history which excited contemporaries across the Protestant world… Neander's alternative idea of world history, centred on the leavening spread of the invisible church through contrasting forms of Christianity and culture, exercised a powerful sway over Protestant historians everywhere… Appearing to afford a mode of securing Protestantism from the twin dangers of sectarianism and unbelief, Neander's 'unpartisan' philosophy simultaneously became an important instrument of Protestant nation-building in the hands of the historians drawn towards it.
