O seu pai Leonid chamava-lhe ma petite, dava-lhe a companhia e as lições de uma preceptora francesa, e nas histórias da sua infância a Gata Borralheira apareceu-lhe como Cendrillon, e a Capuchinho Vermelho como Petit Chaperon Rouge. No romance David Golder o judeu sabe que deve sempre "recomeçar" e muitas vezes terá, talvez, de fazê-lo. Leonid estava a "recomeçar", e poucos anos mais tarde voltaria a ser um abastado banqueiro; passaria a ser monsieur Léon, a sua mulher Anna passaria a ser madame Fanny, e Irma Irina, claro está, mademoiselle Irene; continuavam a comunicar uns com os outros em francês, como já antes faziam, mas agora no país certo; e adquiriam os costumes e os comportamentos da alta burguesia de Paris. Irene frequentava a Sorbonne num curso de letras, e uma conceituada escola de dança. No dia 17 de Julho de 1942, Irene Nemirowsky [1903-1942] estava entre os 928 judeus metidos em vagões para transporte de gado, com palha no chão e um balde com água, num comboio que durante três dias e duas noites atravessou a França, a Alemanha e a Polónia até Auschwitz. Chegadas ao destino, as mulheres foram separadas dos homens, entregaram jóias e alianças de casamento, foram rapadas, tomaram um banho de chuveiro com água fria e vestiram batas às riscas. No dia seguinte tiveram um número tatuado no pulso. Irene Nemirowsky só viveu trinta dias em Auschwitz; não chegou a esqueleto vivo nem à câmara de gás; morreu, atingida pela epidemia de tifo que nesse momento matava piedosamente os residentes do campo.» [Aníbal Fernandes].

Vor der Oktoberrevolution flieht die Familie nach Paris. Irene heiratet den weißrussischen Bankier Michel Epstein, bekommt zwei Töchter und veröffentlicht ihren Rom…an "David Golder", der sie schlagartig berühmt und zum Star der Pariser Literaturszene macht. Viele weitere Veröffentlichungen folgen. Als der Zweite Weltkrieg ausbricht und die Deutschen auf Paris marschieren, flieht sie mit ihrem Mann und den Töchtern in die Provinz. Am 13. Juli 1942 wird sie verhaftet. Keine vier Wochen später stirbt sie in Auschwitz. Ihre Töchter Denise und Elisabeth überleben, fliehen bis zur Befreiung von einem Versteck ins andere. Immer das dicke Manuskript, an dem ihre Mutter fieberhaft bis zur Verhaftung schrieb, im Koffer. Irenes ältere Tochter Elisabeth Gilles arbeitet später als Übersetzerin und Verlegerin. 3200 gr.
