It was finished in 1780 and caused the ruin of the author. According some authors (e.g. Wend von Kalnein) this publication is the most important theoretical work of the period. Neufforge built little or nothing himself, his powers of invention being channelled into the creation of these 900 designs, allmost all engraved by himself. Published with the approval of the Paris Academy, they demonstrate the fusion of the French academic tradition with the growing interest in antiquity, and so became a major influence in the growth of neo-classicism.
