Label "Now distributed by the Lotus Press" p…asted on title-page, offsetting to feps, "Doreen and Walter Newlyn/ Leeds/ September 1955" in green pen to ffep, clipping of W.H.E.'s 1971 poem 'Lines on the Serpentine Way newly-paved with Tombstones (true and false) across St. George's Fields' pasted to recto of rear fep. The British economist and educator, Walter Newlyn (1915-2002), was known for his work on monetary theory and with African nations. From 1967 (until his retirement in 1978) he was Professor of Developmental Economics at the University of Leeds (UoL) and in 1964 founded its African Studies Unit, now LUCAS. Both Doreen and Walter were passionate about theatre; in the late 1950s they set up the Uganda Pilgrim Players, the country's first multi-racial theatre group. Back in the UK, Doreen was key to the foundation of the Leeds Playhouse in 1968. The collection features two poems by Storm Jameson: 'Silchester' and 'Cloud Form'. A generation younger than Jameson (who graduated from UoL in 1912), both Doreen (who was a Social Studies Lecturer at UoL from 1948 to 1952) and Walter (who was, by 1948, an Assistant Lecturer) did overlap with her husband Guy Chapman's tenure as Professor of Modern History from 1945 to 1953.

Pushing to spine ends, spine and sections of upper board sunned, small nick to lower board. Edges toned. "Anthony Smith" inscribed on ffep in blue pen (an ownership… signature?), with "Walter and Doreen Newlyn/ Leeds. 1955." above in different blue pen. Else, clean and tight. A very good copy of Smith's first book, unusual with his signature. Anthony Smith (1926-2014) was a natural history TV presenter, travel writer and explorer. Here, he documents an Oxford University-funded expedition to Iran, exploring qunat irrigation channels near Jupar, in which a new species of blind white loach fish was discovered and named for him: Noemacheilus smithi. Rubbed at extremities and joints, some scoring, bottom corner of bottom board bumped. Toned edges, a few spots to leading edge. Affectionately inscribed by Wilson Knight in blue biro to half-title: "For/ Do…reen/ & Walter/ in memory of so many productions/ from Wilson/ Leeds, 22 June 1962" and then signed in blue biro to title page: "G. Wilson Knight". Else, clean and tidy. An interesting association copy inscribed in the year of publication (and his retirement from the University of Leeds). The literary interpreter (his own term) and Shakespearean, George "Dick" Wilson Knight, CBE (1897-1985) held a Chair in English Literature at the University of Leeds (UoL) from 1956 until his retirement in 1962. A charismatic lecturer and influential, if idiosyncratic, critic, Wilson Knight was also an actor and theatre director: "G. Wilson Knight combines with his prophetic fervour a well-seasoned practical dedication to the theatre, as an actor of heroic force, as a reader of dramatic verse of bardic vitality, and as one of the most enterprising directors of poetic drama in the modern semi-professional theatre." (Kaufmann, 1963). He was a member of the Psychic Research Society in Leeds and a vice-president of the Spiritualist Association of Great Britain, having become interested in spiritualism after his mother's death in 1950. The Golden Labyrinth was based on his UoL lecture course on British drama (ODNB). Doreen Newlyn was a Social Studies Lecturer at the University of Leeds (1948-52) and a member of its Staff Dramatic Society, alongside Wilson Knight. With her husband, the economist and Africanist Walter Newlyn, she set up the Uganda Pilgrim Players in the late 1950s, the country's first multi-racial theatre group. Back in the UK, Newlyn was key to the foundation of the Leeds Playhouse in 1968.

Else, clean and tidy. A pleasing copy of an early edition of Nehru's popular epistolary natural and human history written for his ten-year-old daughter, Indira. Unusual, even as a reprint of the second edition. With printed dedication to his daughter, Indira (1917-1984; later Ghandi) who followed in her father's political footsteps and became India's third Prime Minister (1966-1977; 1980-1984).
