Partono con lui Leo, che per la sua verve goliardica è l'anima del gruppo; Emilio, ombroso investigatore privato; e Carlo, informatico nullafacente che di tanto in tanto collabora con Emilio nelle indagini. Durante l'inaugurazione, una donna austriaca viene strattonata dal fratello, che la invita a lasciare la festa. L'avvenente bionda verrà poi trovata strangolata nei pressi della tenuta. Quasi per gioco, i quattro gitanti decidono di indagare sul caso, che appare fin da subito assai più complicato rispetto a quanto emerge dal fermo di polizia. È così che si imbattono in vicende e personaggi spassosi, acquisendo di volta in volta piccoli tasselli che disvelano verità inattese. Sullo sfondo, le inquietudini dell'avvocato Vivaldi, che aveva riposto in tale gita la speranza di qualche giorno di puro svago, e che si trova, attraverso un'intuizione dell'ultima ora, a maledire se stesso per aver risolto l'enigma e consegnato l'assassino alla giustizia.
