Illustrated with nine b/w photographs. 27 pages. 10.25 x 7 inches. The third and final monograph by Monk David Nicholson, preceded by Liturgical Music in Benedictine Monasticism: The M…onasteries of Monks and Liturgical Music in Anglican Benedictine Monasticism. This volume profiles six Lutheran monastic communities, outlining their history and liturgical and musical practices. The monastic communities are 1) St. Augustine's House, Oxford Michigan. 2) Sisters of the Holy Spirit, Alsike Kloster, Sweden. 3) Ostanbacks Kloster, Ostanback, Sala, Sweden. 4) Sisters of the Risen Saviour, Overselo Klostergard, Stallarholmen, Sweden. 5) The Community Casteller Ring, Rodelsee, Schlos Schwanberg, Germany. 6) Priorat Sankt-Wigbert, Werninghausen, Germany. Monk David Nicholson (1919-2009) began his studies at the University of Ottawa, in Ontario, Canada in 1941, and completed his theological studies in 1950. After ordination, his life as a monk emphasized music, primarily Gregorian Chant, which he studied at six universities in the U.S. and in England. Nicholson also had two extended periods of study of Gregorian Chant at Solesmes Abbey in France, which is a highly-regarded center for the study of Gregorian Chant. In 1968 he earned a master's of music from Northwestern University, in Evanston, Ill. His work as a choirmaster at Mount Angel Seminary began in 1950 and continued there to 1965. During those same years he taught Gregorian Chant to novices and seminarians.
