Suppl. gr. 1238 aus der ersten Hälfte des 14. Jhs. enthält auf den Blättern 104r bis 110v einen wertvollen Zeugen für das Synonymenlexikon des Herennios Philon. Auf Blatt 112r-v schließt sich unter der Überschrift [.] eine Reihe von 49 Artikeln über mit dem Buchstaben A beginnende Wörter an, die bei Astruc als »arrangement du début de louvrage <dAmmonios, De differentia adfinium vocabulorum) « bezeichnet wird. Die Verwandtschaft dieser Artikelreihe mit dem sog. Ammonioslexikon ist in der Tat offenkundig, doch ebenso rasch zeigt sich, daß 20 der 49 Lemmata bei Ammonios keine Entsprechung haben. Eine Analyse ergibt folgendes: Die Reihenfolge der prinzipiell unter Berücksichtigung der beiden ersten Buchstaben jedes Lemmawortes geordneten Artikel entspricht durchgehend der in Symeons Synonymikon eingehaltenen, in den Glossen 2 bis 8 zugleich auch der des Ammonios. Auffällig ist, daß es sich um 2 Reihen handelt: (a) Gl. 2-8, (b) Gl. 10-49. Diese alphabetische Ordnung wird an fünf Stellen durch Glossen durchbrochen, die sich weder bei Amm. noch bei Symeon finden und auch sonst nicht für Herennios bezeugt sind. Die Untersuchung der Methode Zenodots unterliegt noch engeren Beschränkungen: Da Begründungen des Kritikers selten erhalten sind, muß im einzelnen Fall meist vom Ergebnis seiner Entscheidung auf deren Begründung zurückgeschlossen werden. Dieses Verfahren beruht auf der Voraussetzung, daß in dem betreffenden Fall Zenodot überhaupt eine Entscheidung zwischen ,seiner' und einer anderen, uns bekannten Lesart getroffen hat. So gute Gründe sich im allgemeinen für die Zulässigkeit dieser Voraussetzung anführen lassen, sowenig läßt sich im einzelnen die Möglichkeit ausschließen, daß von Späteren als zenodoteisch zitiert wurde, was Zenodot einzig in der Überlieferung vorgefunden hatte. Allein eine Gruppe textkritischer Operationen bietet auch im Einzelfall die Gewähr, daß die fragliche Voraussetzung gegeben ist: die Athetesen. Sie zeigen stets an, daß Zenodot die betroffenen Verse sowohl gekannt wie verworfen hat. Grundlage der vorliegenden Arbeit sind daher die Athetesen und, soweit sich deren konjekturale Herkunft vermuten läßt, auch andere Nachrichten über den Versbestand der zenodoteischen Homerausgabe. Wir wissen nicht, ob Zenodot wirklich in erster Linie an der Aussonderung von Zusätzen interessiert war, aber er war nach unserer Kenntnis doch der erste, der solche Eingriffe durchgehend vorgenommen hat; insofern dürfen sie als für ihn kennzeichnend gelten. Zum andern ist die Athetese und, soweit sie konjekturaler Herkunft ist, auch die Versauslassung im Hinblick auf die Methode interessant, weil sie eine absichtlich herbeigeführte Textverderbnis, die Interpolation, voraussetzt. Drittens aber ist die Frage, in welcher Weise Zenodot, mit dem die Geschichte des Homertextes in ein im engeren Sinne historisches Stadium tritt, den genuinen Versbestand zu ermitteln gesucht hat, auch für die moderne Homerkritik nicht ganz gleichgültig.
