In folio (30,5x20,8 cm); (12), 288, (12), (2 b.) pp. Prima edizione latina. First latin edition. Legatura coeva in piena pargamena floscia, qualche lieve difetto. Due macchiolne d'inchiostro a pagina 259 e 260 del tutto irrilevanti e un leggerissimo alone al margine esterno di una cinquantina di carte, ininfluente e praticamente quasi invisibile (leggermente più marcato nel margine basso delle ultime tre carte), un forellino al margine esterno bianco e della seconda carta dell'indice dovuto ad un difetto della carta prestampa e nel complesso esemplare in più che buone condizioni di conservazione. Grande marca tipografica di Arrivabene al frontespizio con Samaritana al pozzo offre da bere a Gesù ed il motto "Quicunque biberit ex hac aqua, non sitiet in aeternum". Prima celeberrima traduzione latina (una seconda edizione sempre in latino uscì lo stesso anno ma in 8° presso Sebastianum Bartolomaei Honorati a Lione) di uno dei più antichi testi gastronomici. L'opera fu stampata per la prima volta da Aldo Manuzio nel 1514. Nel 1556, visto il grande successo dell'opera, Andrea Arrivabene decise di produrre una traduzione latina elaborata dall'umanista milanese Natale Conti che passò quasi tutta la sua vita a Venezia. L'edizione di Arrivabene permise di conoscere l'opera ad una platea ancora maggiore e di sancirne il successo tanto che da questa edizione in poi , varie furono le riedizioni, compresa una nello stesso 1556. L'autore dell'opera è lo scrittore egizio dell'età imperiale, Ateneo di Naucrati (Ath?naios Naukratítes o Naukrátios, nato a Naucrati in data sconosciuta e morto dopo il 192 dato che nelle sue opere si trovano critiche a Commodo) che redasse il testo in greco. Il testo è considerato un classico di enorme importanza per la conoscenza degli usi ed i costumi del mondo greco. Della vita dell'autore si sa pochissimo ma si suppone che sia stato uno dei bibliotecari della Biblioteca di Alessandria per i 700 autori e 2500 opere citati nel volume che suggeriscono che solo una persona con un accesso diretto alla biblioteca di Alessandria avrebbe potuto riportare. L'opera segue la classica struttura del Simposio platonico, dove l'autore racconta quello da lui visto e sentito in un simposio, all'amico Timocrate. Ma rispetto al Simposio platonico, qui ampio risalto è dato all'aspetto gastronomico che è l'argomento centrale dell'opera con descrizioni di vini e cibi hanno fatto dell'opera un classico della storia della gastronomia. Intorno alle descrizione gastronomiche si sviluppano diversi argomenti come il lusso (fra i quali abbondano le descrizioni di profumi e bagni termali), la dieta, la salute, il sesso omosessuale e eterosessuale, la musica, l'umorismo, la prostituzione e la lessicografia greca. I critici sono oggi concordi che senza questo lavoro di Ateneo numerosissime importanti informazioni non solo sul mondo dell'antica Grecia ma anche su alcuni autori, come ad esempio i poeti parodici Archestrato di Gela, Matrone di Pitane e il medico Androne, oggi sarebbero del tutto totalmente sconosciuti. Infatti l'autore, all'interno dell'opera ampi stralci di autori dei quali non ci sono giunte opere, specie da commediografi. Nel XV° libro si trova una celebre raccolta di 25 scolii attici risalenti alla fine del VI-V secolo a.C, improvvisazioni simposiache estemporanee ideate e declamate proprio durante questi banchetti. Vicaire nella sua celeberrima bibliografia gastronomica scrive di quest'opera "Athéné y traite d'une quantité de sujets relatifs à la gastronomie. Les noms des gourmands les plus fameux, des cuisiniers célèbres y sont cités ; les vertus et qualités des légumes, poissons et animaux font le sujet de longues dissertations ainsi que les vins, les usages admis dans les repas et fêtes épulaires. On y trouve aussi des renseignements sur les Apicius." (Vicaire, Bibliographie gastronomique, 50). Questa prima edizione latina che segue la prima edizione aldina del 1514 è rara e ancor più rara a repirirsi nella sua legatura originale. Rif.
