Horrester.- // Primera edición de la versión definitiva de la 'Aritmética' de Barrême, quizás la obra de aritmética comercial más difundida del siglo XVIII. Efectivamente, la edición original, debida a François Barrême, había sido publicada por primera vez en 1672 (ver nuestra ref. C-0456), correspondiendo las ediciones posteriores a 1685 a una versión revisada por sus hijos que, con esta edición que ofrecemos, fue a su vez fuertemente corregida y ampliada a casi el doble de contenido para actualizarse y poder competir comercialmente con otro éxito de ventas de la contabilidad del momento, 'La science des négociants', de Mathieu de la Porte. Esta participación familiar en la actualización de la obra de Barrême fue posible porque la de los Barrême era un auténtica firma mercantil, establecida por François y seguida por su hijo Gabriel, su nieto Nicolás y los hijos de este, centrada en la contabilidad. Mantuvieron abierta una academia de contabilidad y teneduría de libros en París, sus miembros eran peritos del Tribunal de cuentas y, a lo largo de casi un siglo, editaron múltiples libros prácticos de aritmética comercial, cuentas hechas, tarifas, teneduría de libros, partidas dobladas., todo ello en perfecta retroalimentación. Un ejemplo es el mensaje contenido en la advertencia al lector que precede las 190 páginas de ampliación de este edición: "Es bien sabido que hay un montón de cosas de la Aritmética que no pueden ponerse en forma de libro y que necesitan ser aprendidas de la boca de un buen maestro". Las novedades incorporadas a esta edición, aparte de correcciones, recogen un tratamiento más en profundidad en materia de divisiones, fracciones, regla de proporciones y cálculo de aleaciones. Estas ampliaciones venían motivadas en que el problema al que se enfrentaba la aritmética comercial del momento era el de la necesidad de cubrir las operaciones con combinaciones de cantidades de un mismo tipo de bien (moneda, madera, aleaciones.) con cantidades de otros tipos de bienes, siendo de lo más dispar la manera de fraccionarse las unidades de unos y otros, tanto por la unidad de medida como por las proporción de unidad a la que correspondía una fracción en cada tipo diferente de bien. Algo casi incomprensible actualmente en la Europa continental, acostumbrados como estamos a la aplicación (.).
