Edition originale rare de cet ouvrage novateur et fondamental sur le sujet. Il manque aux g…randes bibliothèques (Waller, Osler, Cushing, H.F. Norman). Il s'agit de la première étude expérimentale de la digestion à partir d'une fistule gastrique artificielle (décrite pp. 201 à 206). Cette technique de fistulisation expérimentale permit à Blondlot de déterminer la durée de la digestion pour divers aliments et de démontrer l'indigestibilité du mucus. Ce travail influença notamment Claude Bernard et Pavlov. A signaler en introduction, une intéressante notice historique sur les principales théories émises pour expliquer la digestion. Nicolas Blondlot (1808-1877), né à Charmes (Vosges), étudia la médecine à Nancy, puis à Paris, où il fut reçu major au concours de l'internat des hôpitaux en 1828. Il obtint également un doctorat ès sciences. Il commença par exercer la chirurgie, étant interne de Dupuytren. Mais, de retour à Nancy, il décida de se consacrer à la physiologie expérimentale et à la chimie, et devint professeur de chimie. Il fut élu associé de l'Académie de médecine. Blondlot (1808-1877) was a French chemist and toxicologist, professor of chemistry at Nancy. In 1835 he assisted Henri Braconnot with his work on recovering gastric juice from dogs and for this was later acknowledged by Pavlov: "Pavlov praises Nicolas Blondlot and Rudolf Heidenhain for their contribution of earlier decades" (Daniel P. Todes, Pavlov's Physiology Factory, Johns Hopkins 2002, p. 212). This edition is dedicated to the distinguished Italian pathologist Salvatore Tommasi. Garrison & Morton 992.2 (for the first edition, "gastric fistula for experimental purposes"). Octavo (210 x 128 mm). Contemporary marbled quarter sheep, gilt-banded smooth spine, olive green label, marbled sides, vellum corner tips, speckled edges. Gilt initials "G. C." at foot of spine.
