The second edition in English, first published in 1715, using the same plates. Both editions important in introducing Palladianism or the neo-classical architectural style in Britain. Andrea Palladio, transformed architecture not only during his lifetime, but his reinterpreted Classical stylings were imitated from the 18th century until today. Today Palladio's architecture is a model for building with the 3 rules of architecture attributed to Vitruvius-a building should be well-built, useful, and beautiful to look at. Palladio's Four Books of Architecture was widely translated, a work that quickly spread Palladio's ideas throughout Europe and into the New World of America. (Craven) Born Andrea Di Pietro della Gondola, he was later named Palladio after the Greek goddess of wisdom. The new name is said to have been given to him by an early employer, supporter, and mentor, the scholar and grammarian Gian Giorgio Trissino (1478-1550). The previous owner obtained these in a larger c…ollection of 300 such unique edition exemplars. The lot is comprised of: 1) BRANGWYN, FRANK, Illustrator. RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (London, England and Edinburgh, Scotland: T. N. Foulis, 1911), measuring 175 x 145 mm. (6 7/8" x 5 5/8"). Bound in publisher's original vellum with gilt titling to front cover and spine, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Eight tipped-in color illustrations by Frank Brangwyn and lovely frontispiece. Slightly bowed boards and very minor soiling thereto, else nearly Fine condition. Uncommonly seen in vellum. 127 pp. and with a page of publisher's additional titles; 2) BULL, RENE, Illustrator. RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (Banbury, England: Hodder and Stoughton, [1913]), measuring 275 x 205 mm. (10 7/8" x 8 1/8"). Bound handsomely in brown cloth over boards, front cover being quite elaborately decorated, with gilt titling on spine, red-stamped lettering to front cover. Illustrated by Rene Bull, including tipped-in full-color plate at fronttis illustrating Quatrain VII, protected by present but detached tissue-guard. Sidney L. Nyburg bookplate inside front flap, leading to some shadowing opposite, foxing at endpapers front and rear, protected now in stiff Mylar jacket, light scuffing to tips, edges. Interior is easily Near Fine and features elaborate heads and tails, initials and the like; truly a gorgeous volume. Unpaginated, but like 160 pp. or thereabouts; 3) CARR, HAMZEH, Illustrator. THE RUBAIYAT OF UMAR KHAIYAM. (London: John Lane the Bodley Head Limited, 1924), measuring 257 x 180 mm. (10 1/8" x 7"). Translated from the French of J.B. Nicolas by Frederick Baron Corvo, and edited by Edward Heron-Allen. Bound in tan cloth over boards, with elaborate gilt titling to spine and front cover (note variant spelling, "Umar") and fine illustrations thereto. Complete with uber-scarce original paper dust jacket, illustrated though splits of edges, preserved nicely in thin acetate wrapper. Augmented by 16 plates in color by Hamzeh Carr. Printed with facing French text. Interior volume bright, clean, neat, and attractive. Frontis matter, 193 pp.; 4) DODSON, BERT, Illustrator. SELECTIONS FROM OMAR KHAYYAM'S RUBAIYAT: A PORTFOLIO OF DRAWINGS BY BERT DODSON. (Norwalk, Connecticut: Fairfield Graphics Incorporated, n.d.) 458 x 330 mm. (18 x 13"). Not signed, but probably one of 700 copies printed thus. An unusual item indeed, with 39 numbered plates housed in a folding, envelope-like portfolio with embossed title. An additional 19 black-ink drawings by the illustrator, quite evocative, that augment the printed quatrains. An unusually clean assemblage (though the portfolio is a big soiled and grubby). The illustrations are nearly line-drawings but tilt and totter between Art Deco and Surrealist of appears. The artist, Bert Dodson (born, 1938), illustrated several score children's books, too--at least 80 to 2019; 5) DULAC, EDMUND, Illustrator. RUBAIYAT OF OMAR KHAYYAM. (London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1909, printed for the publisher by T. and N. Constable, from Edinburgh University Press), measuring 285 x 225 mm. (11 1/4" x 8 7/8"). An unusually scarce First Edition exemplar and with a laid-in notice of an exhibition of Dulac's illustrated works, to be held at the Leicester Galleries (including watercolors for "Omar Khayyam") from 16 October to 20 November 1909. Bound in white cloth over boards and with elaborate gilt decorations and gilt lettering to front cover and spine. Fine, colorful bookplate of Mae Borg at third free endpaper. Decorated endpapers front and rear. Slight forward cock to spine, light scuffing to tips and edges, spine head and foot. Slight soiling to white cloth (as is inevitable), but interior is bright and fre.
