Pas de couverture. Condizione: Bon. D'après Jean-Baptiste LE PRINCE (1734-1781), peintre et graveur français. Il est le frère de Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, auteure du conte La Belle et la Bête. Élève de François Boucher. Ses premiers tableaux sont peints dans un style rococo proche de celui de son maître. Il se forme éga…lement à la gravure. Sa célébrité émane surtout de son invention d'un nouveau type de scène de genre et de son perfectionnement de la technique de l'aquatinte. En 1765, il est agréé à l'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture Gravée par Nicolas DE LAUNAY (1739-1792), graveur français. Il est agréé de l'Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture en 1789, puis devint graveur du roi. Largeur 12 cm , hauteur 11 cm à l'intérieur d' un cadre en bois doré et sous verre. Très Bon état.

First edition, 1768. A monumental reference work of 18th-century French drama, this Bibliothà que du Thà âtre François was published in Dresden by the French expatriate printer Michel Groell in 1768. It offers a comprehensive survey of French theatre from its origins in medieval mystery plays through the great classical traged…ies of Pierre Corneille, with subsequent volumes extending the record up to the contemporary stage. The set includes: Extracts of plays written for the French stage from its beginnings through Corneille. A chronological list of theatrical works composed since that era. Two extensive alphabetical indexes, one of authors and one of plays, making it an indispensable bibliographic tool. Each volume opens with a splendid allegorical engraved frontispiece, designed by Charles-Nicolas Cochin fils and engraved in 1767 by N. de Launay and Masard. The plates dramatize the triumph of taste (Le Triomphe du Goût), the struggle against folly (Le Goût commence à sâaffranchir des Liens de la Sottise), and the lament under follyâs rule (Le Goût gà mit sous les loix de la Folie). These vivid engravings encapsulate the Enlightenmentâs view of theatre as both entertainment and moral edification. This three-volume set embodies the encyclopedic spirit of the Enlightenment, where theatre was considered not only art but also a mirror of society. Issued outside France, in Dresden, it also reflects the pan-European appetite for French culture and letters on the eve of the Revolution. With three allegorical frontispieces engraved after C.-N. Cochin fils (1767). Fair to Good. Bindings rubbed with surface losses and chipping at spines, corners bumped, hinges tender. Red-stained edges still vivid. Interiors generally clean, engravings sharp with only light marginal spotting and minor stains. Complete as issued. Thieme/B. 22, 438: De Launay, einer "der glänzensten Vertreter der französ. Reproduktionsgraphik", der "namentlich galante Szenen", oft nach Honoré Fragonard radierte. Dieser (vgl. Thieme/B.12, 275ff) hat…te "größeren Erfolg" mit den "galanten Schilderungen eleganter Leichtlebigkeit, mit pikanten Boudoirszenen" etc.; die Datierung des Blatts liegt vermutlich nach seiner Heirat mit Marie-Anne Gérard (1769). Dargestellt ist in feinster Rokoko-Manier eine häusliche Szene, in der die strenge Madame ihr kleines Kind, in seinem zerrissenen Hemd halbnackt, zur Rede stellt, welches Rückendeckung und Stärkung von der Kinderfrau erhält. Die Szene, nach Art eines Claire-Obscure ausgeführt, wird umrahmt von einer ovalen architektonischen Konstruktion, bekränzt von Efeu, und besticht durch die starken Lichteffekte zwischen handelnden Personen und dunklem Hintergrund, wie Fragonard es bei Rembrandt-Studien gelernt hatte. Rahmen etwas berieben und gebräunt; Papier gebräunt, gewellt und vermutl. angestaubt sowie mit einigen wenigen, schwachen Stockflecken; Abdeckpappe, rostige Befestigungsnägel und Papierklebestreifen am Rücken mit deutlichen Alterungsspuren; dieses und die Aufhängevorrichtung (2 rostige Ösen mit stoffummantelter Drahtschlaufe) weisen auf ein erhebliches Alter der Rahmung hin. Engraving on wove paper. In excellent condition with the exception of a crease in the upper left margin outside the platemark and some small white spots in the image. A wonderful depiction of pre-revolutionary Parisian aristocracy by de Launay after a gouache by Nicolas Lavreince. A perfectly dressed, handsome young man suavely…hands off a love letter to his perfectly dressed young sweetheart while he distracts the older woman: mother or aunt who chaperones. It is a wonderful moment that speaks volumes about aristocratic life prior to the revolution. What seems at first a charming and witty deceit also implies a world in which the pursuit of pleasure has become a way of life. In any event, the amorous back-hand takes place in a setting of utmost refinement: the room is a magnificent example of a Louis XVI interior with its massive mirror, elaborate moldings, carvings and furnishings, a harp, inlaid piano and cello. The characters are dressed to a degree, for a musical afternoon, that defies belief by modern standards: the lover who reaches awkwardly to get her precious missive is especially grand, with flowers and feathers in her hair, a dress festooned with garlands of artificial flowers, and rose-topped pointed silk shoes. Everyone exudes elegance and refinement in clothing, manner and gesture. All in all, a superb revelation of a long ago world, perfectly engraved by de Launay from Lavreince's incisive painting.
