In this economy, the role of the spiritual father continues to be integral to the perpetuation and vitality of the Orthodox Christian faith. Fr. Stebbing is particularly taken with the Romanian model and has spent several years traveling the country, visiting its villages and monasteries, and meeting with its spiritual fathers along the way. He begins with an historical portrait of Romanian Orthodoxy, introducing us to its pagan precursor and drawing attention to interesting similarities between the two. In many ways, Christianity was the fulfillment of a truth merely hinted at by its pre-christian ancestors, the Dacians, a mono-theistic and semi-monastic people much like the Celts. Fr. Stebbing proceeds to describe the state of Romanian monasteries after Communism, explaining the historical and biblical roots of spiritual fatherhood (as well as its theological tenets) and arranging a gallery of modern portraits. His inspiration? The well-known and loved Father Cleopa of Sihãstria, a flesh and blood testament to the way instructive love can heal our souls.
