Zoshchenko Mikhail Mikhailovich (1894-1958), prose writer, screenwriter, translator, in the 1920s was a member of the Serapion Brothers group. The writer was subjected to constant censorship attacks, starting in 1923. Two books, created by him in close cooperation with the satirist and art critic N.E. Radlov (1889-1942), were confiscated for drawings and captions satirizing political figures and mentioning disgraced persons. In Happy Ideas it mentions the artist Mikhail Chekhov who went abroad (his name had already been banned at the time, as well as Meyerhold's play,The Inspector General. Copies of Happy Ideas were seized in 1931 shortly after release through the Knigotsentra (Soviet Book Center), which ordered them to be withdrawn from sale and destroyed. The book was included in the List of books from Leningrad to be removed from libraries and bookstores. (Bloom. Forbidden books by Russian writers and literary critics 1917 1991. No. 201). No library holdings found worldwide, rare. The present copy was incorrectly stapled by the printer and never issued in pictorial wrappers.
