You will see families with the same aspirations for their children as our ancestors had for their children to learn English, get an education, get a good job, and end the cycle of working in sweatshops, agriculture, hotels, and fast food in order to have their own home. You look for welfare cheats but you will find people who are willing to work unbelievably hard for a minimum wage that has not changed since 1997. Some work 70 to 80 hours per week with no overtime pay doing jobs that few Americans will do, to support their families back home and get a foothold on America. These are people who have earned the right for full participation in our society, to be called citizens, and to be reunited with their families. Between four and six million Mexicans live in the United States, and 500,000 more find a way to the United States every year. Why do they leave their homes and families? Seventy-five percent of rural Mexicans live in poverty and the underemployment rate is over 60%. Many who do find jobs are paid a the equivalent of $3.82 per day. A Mexican has to work an entire day for what he can make in 46 minutes in the US. Some argue that free trade has benefited people on both sides of the border, but it has been a disaster for Mexican farmers who cannot compete with the cheap corn, beans, and rice grown on US farms that are subsidized over $3 billion a year by the US government. Every day in Mexico, 60 small farmers go out of business and head for the shantytowns or for the border. The Mexican government, shackled with huge inflation and unemployment rates, does not discourage this exodus. These are the stories of courageous men who leave their families and homes pinning their hopes on rewards for working hard. Jungm Jaeyun - Design (illustratore).

4to, xvi, 75pp., image of a bust of Henry VIII by Torrigiani as frontispiece, facsimiles of the Pynson edition in full and the existing fragments of the Goes edition, images of bindings and other fragments in the text, orig. cloth. With notes on the two unique editions in Westminster Abbey Library, descriptions of the bindings i…n which they were preserved, and the other items found in these bindings by Howard M. Nixon. The Gardyners Passetaunce is a propaganda poem promoting the newly formed Holy League which was proclaimed on 4 October 1511. It is a simplified version of a densely written Latin tract by James Whytstons which discusses the nature of a just war, the merit of fighting in defence of the Pope and compares Louis XIII of France to various tyrants and persecutors of religion. Pynson, the king's printer, published this 'tabloid' poetic version at the behest of the King and Court to spread the propaganda to a wider less academic public, a second edition appeared, probably in the same year, printed by Goes and Watson. The poem is anonymous but Nixon's essay on the poem's history does provide all the available evidence on the subject and draws his conclusions. An excellent book published by the Roxburghe Club in honour of Howard M. Nixon after his death.

Fairy Chess Review (FCR) was a magazine that was devoted principally to fairy ch…ess problems but also included extensive original results on related questions in mathematical recreations such as knight's tours and polyominos (under the title of "dissections") as well as much else, such as chess-related word puzzles. It appeared six times per year and nine volumes were published, from 1930 to 1958. Although they are often referred to under the title Fairy Chess Review, the first two volumes (August 1930 to June 1936) in fact bore the title The Problemist Fairy Chess Supplement. These were published by the British Chess Problem Society (BCPS) as an offshoot of their magazine The Problemist which began in 1926. The first two volumes were supported financially by the Falmouth businessman Charles Masson Fox who was also a problemist, who died in 1936. From volume 3 onward the FCR was independent of the BCPS, although most of its contributors were members. The editor from 1930 until August 1951 was Thomas Rayner Dawson who died in November that year. An "In Memoriam" issue was edited by C. E. Kemp in February 1952, and the magazine then continued under the editorship of Dennison Nixon (April 1952 to April 1956) and C. E. Kemp (June 1956 to April 1958). Condition: Fold in center for mailing purposes, some internal markings, light edge wear. A very good set of a scarce chess publication.
