The binding is in great condition, still tight, with only very minor bumping, some sunning to the spine, and a strip of discoloration (1.8cm) to the heads of the front and back boards of vol. 1. Very minor foxing to pages, inscription by an early owner on the title page of each volume. Complete with 16 fold-out plates. A student of Ampere and a professor at the University of Florence, Leopoldo Nobili was one of the key pioneers of electrochemistry and thermodynamics, known in particular for the critical instruments he invented for investigating these fields, the most well-known among them being the astatic galvanometer. These volumes comprise a compendium of his writings to date at the time of publication, some of which had been previously published in journals, though many of them appeared here for the first time; including a number of his designs for instruments and apparatuses which are illustrated.

One of the earliest publications of the great Italian physicist, a study of attraction which originally appeared in the Giornale Fisica (vol X, Pavia 1817). The appendix or second part beginning on page 21, which takes up the larger part of the volume, is here printed for the first time. It expounds a new principle relating to the accelerative forces and a new doctrine concerning the phenomenon of capillary tubes. Nobili (1784-1835), professor of physics at Florence, conducted research on electricity. He opposed the Voltaic theory of the decomposition of water, and was 'the discoverer of Nobili's rings, the coloured transparent films of metal deposited by the electro-chemical processes. He also invented the thermo-multiplier' (Zeitlinger).
