In this world anything is possible and everything can happen, The artist draws inspiration for his works primarily from the creative world of his own children whom he relentlessly observes and documents, but he is also inspired to a great extent by old photographs, films and cartoons. Although these works transcend an atmosphere of playfulness - humour as well as warmth - they also raise questions, These motifs become objects of desire, of loss and memory. They remind you of the loss of your own childhood and innocence, of the ceaseless creativity of childhood before the restrictions and cultural prejudice of our society begin to limit us as persons. Ich höre auf zu existieren, wenn ich arbeite. Leiko Ikemura (geb. in Tsu, Präfektur Mie, Japan, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin) folgt in ihrer Kunst keinem Diktum. In über dreißig Jahren hat die Künstlerin ein vielfältiges Werk bestehend aus Gemälden, Aquarellen, Zeichnungen sowie Terrakotta- und Bronzeskulpturen geschaffen. Ikemura studierte von 1973 bis 1978 Malerei an der Akademie in Sevilla. 1979 ging sie nach Zürich und im Anschluss nach Köln, wo sie während der 1980er Jahre im Kontext der Neuen Wilden auf sich aufmerksam machte. Trotz dieser Nähe zeichnete sich ihr Werk schon damals durch Eigenart und Eigenständigkeit aus. 1991 wurde sie zur Professorin für Malerei an der Hochschule der Künste Berlin berufen und hält eine Professur an der Joshibi Universität für Kunst und Design, Kanagawa-Ku. Neben der Synthese von westlicher und asiatischer Kultur und der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Fremdsein beschäftigt sich Ikemura in ihren Arbeiten immer wieder mit der Figur der Frau, insbesondere in der Phase des Übergangs zur Adoleszenz. Treffend aquarelliert sie diese ambiguen Identitäten und Zwischenstadien in Porträts: Schemenhafte Gesichter, mal Frau, mal Kind, aber auch männliche Gesichter in pastelligen Tönen, die zum Bildrand hin knapp vor der Auflösung des Persönlichen zerfließen.
