This book is a historical introduction to the extensive restructuring of Portugal's laws during the reign of King Manuel I (1495-1521), centering around the comprehensive reform of the 'Foraes' (charters and laws governing the administration and rights of Portuguese cities, towns, and villages). It provides insights into the legal, administrative, and social landscape of Portugal during a pivotal period of transition and consolidation of its institutions. The author, a Portuguese historian, utilizes several primary sources from the Royal Archives of Torre do Tombo, including previously unpublished documents, to present a detailed account of the reforms. The book also examines the motivations, processes, and implications of the Foraes' revision, offering a glimpse into the evolution of local governance and the relationship between the monarchy and its subjects. The significance of this study lies in its contribution to the understanding of Portuguese legal history and its relevance to the development of modern legal systems and institutions in the country. By examining the origins and evolution of the Foraes, the book provides a valuable perspective on the foundations of Portuguese law and the historical context in which it emerged. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

The first is an index of all the lands mentioned in the other parts; the second part contains an alphabetical list of all the lands with forais (charters) granted by King Manuel; the third contains a list of all the lands that have forais inserted in the forais given by King Manuel to other lands; the fourth part includes a list of the lands with forais granted by kings prior to King Manuel and in the period before the Manueline reform. Almost all the forais (charters) were in the Torre do Tombo (Portuguese National Archives) and for those that weren't, the author indicates where they existed. In all of them, the archival quotas are recorded, which are still used today to retrieve the documents in the Torre do Tombo. He learnt palaeography from João Pedro Ribeiro; in 1833, he was appointed to the post of Head Keeper of the Archives on an interim basis. He is the author of the following works: Memória breve de D.
