Captain 0'Brien, a Solent steam master at the time of writing this book, covers the earliest days of services based on the Solent, with extensions to the Isle of Wight, to the Channel Islands and across the Channel to France. He follows the development of the ships, services and companies from the early, frail and low powered paddle steamers until steam had proven its worth, in nautical terms, to about 40 years after the first ventured out on Solent waters.
