hardcover. Condizione: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category tha…t encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. xvi, 587 p.; 23 cm. [balance of title] secular power; and on its inconsistency with the free, humbling, spiritual nature of the Christian dispensation. -- Chapter XXX. Constitutions of Anglo-Saxon states and churches in North America,p.357-72. `10th Section.--Unrighteous Distinction of Colour. A constitution founded o…n such a basis of complete civil and religious liberty, would seem adapted to secure to all the people, without exception, entire freedom and imparti- ality, security and privileges, whatever their rank, persuasion, origin or colour; yet greatly is it to be deplored that, by a monstrous stretch of prejudice, and entire perversion of moral principle, all such as have intheir veins the least tincture of African blood, however fair their colour may be, are not included among the "all men," who are declared to be "created equal," and to possess as such, "inalienable rights,". Europeans have indeed, in their antiquated systems, grossly infringed on the just claims of religious equality and liberty of conscience; but Americans, while boasting of the full enjoyment of these blessings, and of their new-born independent citizenship, have violated them still more grossly and cruelly, by continuing to degrade and enslave their coloured fellow-subjects. In the mean time, freedom is yet further outraged in the Western world, by the enactment of fresh laws, forbidding coloured persons to settle in some of the states, or even to remain there, without giving security of an offensive kind.' (p. 368 f.) Near fine orig. embossed brown cloth.

Aggiungi al carrello12mo (leaf dimensions 18 x 11 cm): 2 pp. Twenty-one lines of text, complete and legible. On aged paper with some wear at head. Casting interesting light on the workings of the provincial Victorian booktrade. Kinsman states: 'I will have much pleasure in helping you all that I can in the Bibliography of your County: and as a star…t to begin with I send you 2 dozen of my Catalogues in which there must be many Staffordshire natives as Authors.' He offers to collate books for Simms, or to 'send the Books themselves for your inspection or purchase (that is such as may be still on hand) you returning them at once when collated.' He asks for the catalogues to be returned once finished with, as 'Of some of my Catalogues not sent I have not a single copy left and of some sent I have only these copies.' Simms lost both hands in childhood and learnt to write with a contraption attached to one of the stumps. His 'Bibliotheca Staffordiensis' was published in a limited edition in 1894.

Aggiungi al carrello2pp., 12mo. 40 lines. Bifolium. Good, on aged paper. The reverse of the second leaf carries half of a red wax seal, as well as the address to 'James Loch Esqr | Bloomsbury Square'. The letter begins: 'My dear Loch | Some friends of mine from the Country are desirous of seeing Lord Stafford's & Lord Grosvenor's pictures some time… next week; & they understand that the obtaining of Tickets is not a matter of course but that some little interest is necessary.' He asks for assistance 'with regard to Cleveland House [.] for Mrs Johnston & party (about 5 or 6 persons)'. He is going 'to the Cambridge Election' on the following day, and thinks that it will be 'very keenly contested'. On his return he hopes 'to attend the Council of the London University', when he hopes 'that Horner's business will be finally & satisfactorily settled'. He has heard 'nothing more about Silk Gowns', but 'Willy Brougham [.] persists in retaining his appointment and will not be scared into resignation, like Plunkett, by the Chancery Lawyers.' In the last paragraph he deprecates the news that 'Lord Exeter is to have one of the blue Ribbands, though he is no friend of Canning's, & indeed closely connected with the high Tory opposition'. This is, in his view, 'one among many instances of C's weakness, & entire dependence upon the higher power.' There is no mention of Loch in Lady Seymour's 'The "Pope" of Holland House, Selections from the Correspondence of John Whishaw and his Friends, 1813-1840' (1906), and the year 1827 is skirted over.
