Dies war die Geburtsstunde der mit Abstand ambitioniertesten und progressivsten Buchgemeinschaft auf deutschem Boden. "Bücher voll guten Geistes" in handwerklich einwandfreier Qualität sollten es sein (und waren es), die zunächst von Leipzig und ab 1926 von Berlin aus ihren Weg in die Wohnstuben der Werktätigen, der sogenannten "Kleinen Leute" fand. Vom Tag ihrer Gründung bis zur vorläufigen Zerschlagung durch die Nazis durchlief die Büchergilde eine fulminante Entwicklung. So konnte sie ihre Mitgliederzahlen von Anfangs 1200 Gründungsmitgliedern auf 85.000 im Jahr 1933, dem Jahr der Zwangseingliederung in die DAF steigern und war damit die mit Abstand größte proletarische Buchgemeinschaft der Weimarer Republik. Zum Vergleich: der sozialdemokratische Bücherkreis brachte es auf eine maximale Mitgliederzahl von 45.000. In deutscher Sprache. 189 pages. Groß 8°.
