Soft cover. Condizione: Fine. One of 1600 copies designed by Andrew Hoyem and produced at the Arion Press in San Francisco. Original publisher's white paper wrappers with black lettering on spine and black and maroon lettering on front cover. 6 1/4" x 9 1/4." 133 pages, complete. Black-and-white illustrations, many of which are…printed portrait photographs, complete. Pages and covers are virtually pristine and intact except for slight rubbing to front and back covers and slightly bumped corners on pages and covers. Binding is tight. A Fine copy. Autobiographical account of a woman pioneer, Eveline Brooks Auerbach (1859-1924). Eveline weaves together her own history with that of her mother, Fanny Brooks, and her father, Julius Brooks. Eveline tells the story of her parents' journey from the East Coast to California with documentation of what life was like in Salt Lake City (SLC), California, and Oregon. Much of Eveline's writings appear to focus on her family's experiences in SLC. Eveline describes the dynamics between Mormons and non-Mormons, how she and her family were treated by Mormons (the Brookses were of German-Jewish descent), Brigham Young, the Ute tribe, social life in the city, and the P. T. Barnum Circus visiting SLC. Other places and topics are addressed such as Portland, Oregon; the Pony Express; gambling saloons; and New York, where Eveline later retired. Front colophon: "Number 42 in the series of keepsakes issued for its members by the Friends of the Bancroft Library." Back colophon: "Edition of 1,600 copies, designed by Andrew Hoyem, and produced at the Arion Press in San Francisco.".

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. In this innovative historical survey, Annegret S. Ogden addresses the need for the modern housewife to adapt to the additional role of wage earner. By examining a variety of diaries, letters, domestic fiction, and household books of the past two centuries, as well as solid statistical and h…istorical data, she seeks not only to uncover the motivations and origins of the typical American housewife, but also to discover an alternative life pattern that has characterized a virtually unrecognized minority of American women. These are the immigrant, black, and frontier women, as well as any other part-time homemakers, who long ago forged the survival tools that are needed by today's majority of working housewives. It is Ogden's contention that an understanding of the historical housewife, as well as her working counterpart, will light the way for those modern American housewives who must adapt their role as both homemaker and wage earner to the shifting complexities of contemporary American life.
