George Cruikshank or Cruickshank (1792 1878) was a British caricaturist and book illustrator, praised as the "modern Hogarth" during his life. His book illustrations for his friend Charles Dickens, and many other authors, reached an international audience. Cruikshank gained notoriety with his political prints that attacked the royal family and leading politicians. In 1820 he received a royal bribe of £100 for a pledge "not to caricature His Majesty" (George IV of the United Kingdom) "in any immoral situation". His work included a personification of England named John Bull who was developed from about 1790 in conjunction with other British satirical artists such as James Gillray, and Thomas Rowlandson. Provenance: George Weare Braikenridge FSA (1775 1856) was an English antiquarian. He was born in the Colony of Virginia, but lived for most of his life in Bristol, England, where he created a large collection of Bristolian historical and topographical material known as the Braikenridge Collection. It contains over 1400 drawings and watercolours of Bristol landscapes and buildings. These are held in Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery, with related collections of manuscripts and other items held by Bristol Central Library and Bristol Archives. The Braikenridge Collection has become the most important historical record of Bristol's appearance in the early 19th century, and makes Bristol one of the best documented English cities in this respect. Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition 12mo 6.5 x 4 inches, xi + [1] + 178 + [2] pp. [3] leaves of plates, in this case joined to make a folding hand-coloured frontispiece. Bound in original green cloth with 'The Archers Guide' lettered in gilt on the upper board, extremities slightly worn very occasional foxing or finger mark in the text but a very good example complete. The bibliography states that the Illustrations were issued in two variants, with a single leaf frontis and two plates bound in the text, found in the paper covered boards bindings, or (as here) with the three plates joined to make a folding frontis. This variant seems to be found only in the cloth bound versions. The plates are identical in both versions. On the front pase-down endpaper is a bookplate sized engraved ticket of 'Calvert Bowyer and Fletcher to their Royal Highnesses the Dutchess of Kent and Princess Victoria 189 Fleet Street London' within an elaborate border of Bows and Arrows, Quivers Etc. Mr Calvert presumably sold this book in has shop. The book is scarce and there only seem about 35 copies recorded in libraries worldwide. A hunt on the web found only two copies of this first edition (both imperfect - lacking a plate or plates) and Bowman in New York has a good example ($500).
