Faded…inscription on the FFEP from the former owner dated 1865. Light foxing to some pages. Pages are clean with no marks or page folds. Bookseller Inventory BS/BS7635 072019. Appleton was located at 200 Bro…adway in NY from 1838 through 1853. Geo S. Appleton was located at 148 Chestnut in Philadelphia from 1846 through 1849. Two pages of publisher's advertising for Appleton's Miniature Classical Library before frontis and title page. (Just 12 books were available in this series at the time this book was printed.) Tissue-protected frontis engraving. Pages are tanned with age but in excellent condition; tight, clean and unmarked. No tears or signs of damp. Lovely small book in Very Good condition. Paul and Virginia contains 109 pages and ends with the original sad ending. There is a b/w etching of Paul and Virginia on the frontispiece. There is also a Memoir of Bernardin de Saint Pierre writ…ten by Sarah Jones. The History of Rasselas contains 98 pages. The Vicar of Wakefield contains 152 pages. The condition of the book is near fine. The pages are all free of marks but three of the pages at the end of the book have been torn and mended. There is an inscription Presented by Teacher R. J. Shull to Frank Reid Dewitt, Dec. 25, 1889. The brown and black embossed cover is beautiful and is imprinted with the raised lettering "May Blessings be upon the head of Cadmus, the Phoenicians, or whoever it was that invented BOOKS" Thos Carlyle. The corners are sharp and the binding is tight.
