With this volume, which will become the new reference work, it completes the project of a new complete edition of the Assayer. The assayer's, with the dialogue concerning the two Chief world systems, the most famous work of Galileo (1564-1642 Pisa Arcetri). It began as a response to the Libra astronomica ac philosophica of Lothario Sarsi (pseudonym of the Jesuit Orazio Grassi) and was dedicated to urban VIII, just assumed the papal throne. With Galileo the assayer reappears in the first person on the cultural scene, after warning of 1616 which forbade to profess or disseminate the Copernican theory. Indice: Premessa e ringraziamenti. Da: Liber Antiquus Early Books & Manuscripts, Chevy Chase, MD, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. 17th c. manuscript in Italian on paper, illustrated with five diagrams, one of them tipped in. Bound in modern marbled boards. Leaves skillfully re-margined. Shine-through and occasional ink blots. From the collection of Robert B. Honeyman (1979, III, n°1195). A practical manual for making sundials, both horizontal and vertical. The last sentence ("ex Patre Horatio Grassio Socie[tatis] Jesu.") indicates that the text is the work of the Jesuit mathematician, astronomer, and architect, Father Orazio Grassi, famous for his dispute with Galileo over the nature of comets (1618-1619) and as architect of the Church of Sant' Ignazio in Rome. The sundial was a key scientific instrument and the Jesuits, whose churches, colleges, gardens, and observatories were outfitted with them, were among the foremost experts in their design and use. They designed and supervised the construction of numerous dials for the papacy, for noble patrons, and as gifts for foreign rulers (such as those brought to China and presented to the Wanli Emperor by Matteo Ricci, S.J.). The Jesuit Orazio Grassi (1583-1654) distinguished himself as an architect, mathematician, physicist, and a designer of instruments. He studied in Rome at the Jesuit Collegio Romano, where from 1604 to 1606 he attended the "Mathematical Academy" of the Jesuit astronomer Christoph Clavius, a leading expert on horology and on the premier instrument of that science, the sundial. From 1616 to 1628 Grassi held the chair of mathematics at his alma mater. There he taught astronomy, optics, and architecture and conducted scientific research. Grassi wrote at least two unpublished works on sundials, both of which survive in manuscript: "Tractatus tres de sphera, de horologis ac de optica", 1617, and "In primum librum de architectura M. Vitruvii et in nonum eiusdem De horologiorum solarium descriptione duo brevissimi tractati", 1624 (Milan, Biblioteca nazionale Braidense, AF.IX.33) This manuscript has not been compared with either text.

"4to (200 x 145 mm.) early vellum 'à l'antique' lately rebacked, with fitting manuscript title on spine, generally clean and well-preserved, but with narrow margins (light browning for the quality of the paper, title shaved at bottom margin, with light damage of the privilege note, below the date, small repair in the blank margin of last leaf). Engraved arms of Cardinal Boncompagni on title, and engraved plate at verso of 4th leaf, pp. (4), 201, (3 blanks, being last leaf an original blank). First edition, rare, of this work that forms part of a published debate between Grassi (under the pseudonym of Lothario Sarsio Sigensano), Galileo, Guiducci and Stelluti regarding the comets of 1618. Grassi in fact previously published a pamphlet, the 'De Tribus Cometis Anni MDCXVIII. disputatio Astronomica', where he asserted that the comets thoroughly discredited the Copernican theory and therefore indirectly attacked the teachings of Galileo, to whom the latter replied (through his former pupil mario Guiducci) with the 'Discorso delle Comete'; Grassi then wrote a most bitter book, the 'Libra Astronomica Ac Philosophica' and Galilei answered with 'Il Saggiatore' in 1623. Grassi was the first to make theology defend the peripatetic physics and attack the Copernican System and its advocate Galileo, thereby compelling him either to ignominious silence or dangerous demonstrations. To answer Grassi and defend the Copernican System was very dangerous, and Galileo hesitated to publish the reply before 1623, when his former friend, Cardinal Barberini, became Pope Urban VIII. In the present work Grassi replies once again pointing out that Galileo is not capable of speaking Latin and doesn't know the good manners; he even asks himself if it was really Galileo who invented the telescope. A second edition of the work was published the following year in Naples. The collation in the Italian OPAC catalogue is wrongly stating p , A-2C4 instead of a (p), A-Z4, Aa4, Bb , Cc4. Carli and Favaro 104; Cinti 80 (first Italian edition); Riccardi I/1, col. 628; see Drake, Stillman & C.D. O'Malley, The Controversy on the comets of 1618 (Philadelphia, 1960). Apparently only 2 copies offered at auction in last 50 years.".

Prima edizione
FIRST EDITION. Engraved title vignette of one of the 1618 comets in the constellation of Libra, with large historiated initials and text diagrams. Antique calf in a contemporary style with gilt borders and gilt- ornamented spine; overall in superb condition. First edition of Grassi's extraordinarily important and bitter attack on Galileo's theory of the nature of comets, later inspiring Il Saggiatore. The scientists' famous dispute started the prior year with Grassi's De tribus cometis, which Galileo (using the alias of his assistant Guiducci) followed up with his provocative Discorso della comete (1619). Grassi responded (under the pseudonym Lothario Sarsi) with this publication of Libra astronomica, in which he strongly defends the ideas of Tycho Brahe and the Jesuits. Galileo went on to publish his polemic and rhetorical masterpiece, Il Saggiatore, as a direct reply to this work. Grassi (1583-1654) was a Jesuit mathematician who taught at the Collegio Romano. This controversy ruined his relationship with Galileo, and earned his adversary the ire of the entire Collegio Romano a major factor in his later difficulties with the Inquisition.
